Why had he thought that this time would be any different?
Falling in love with Kendall had been such a simple thing to do that there were times Danny had difficulty remembering a time that he hadn't been in love with her. She was pretty, and smart, and unlike his last boss, knew the flowers they grew were alive, not just goods to be sold once they'd matured enough to be pleasing to the eye of the average consumer. But most importantly (to him, at least)... she didn't treat him like a stammering wreck, like how it seemed everyone else did sometimes. She treated him like he mattered.
And he had never told her how much that meant to him.
He had been afraid. There was no point in pretending otherwise. If it had turned out that he'd misunderstood, that she was just being nice the whole time, that what he wanted could never be his... he couldn't. He just couldn't. The closest he ever came was the day he saw her again after all those months, and all he could manage then was a hastily hidden note and some nervous prattling.
And now he was doing the same thing with Max.
It was almost funny. In a lot of ways, Max was Kendall's exact opposite, but they did share two things in common: Max was the second person in his life who made him feel like he was needed... and he was the second person he fell in love with.
He should tell him, kiss him, whatever. Anything as long as it meant he didn't make the same mistake he did with Kendall.
But he won't.
