Everyone says "Oh, I hate Maria Reynolds, how could she do that? She is SUCH a hoe!" BUT, what if I told you Maria Reynolds didn't have a choice? That's right, when Miss Maria Reynolds walked into Hamilton's life, she only did it because of her husband. Now, what she said about her husband beating her, cheating her, and mistreating her was very much so true, and the affair was part of his mistreating her. James Reynolds threatened her life and health for the Reynolds Pamphlet to become a thing. If she hadn't of gone through with his plan to get money for himself, she could have been beaten to death. She wanted no part in the ordeal, her husband forced her. Now what do you think of Miss Maria Reynolds?
*update*
the question was asked as to why she wouldn't just tell Hamilton about her husband and here is my answer: her husband took large part in illegalities, and, being a woman in this time period, probably had an education, but not in the sense she would need for this. her studies would have probably included more about how to read and write and maybe some math, but mostly only what her parents would see her as needing, which probably wouldn't be much considering they would expect her to marry and be reliant on her husband. she wouldn't have had the best knowledge as to what to do, I mean, wouldn't you be scared out of your mind if you knew your husband took part in illegal dealings and has abused you AND is willing to sell you as a prostitute?
*second update*
further research proves that Maria married James at the age 15 and they had a child. James threatened their child if she didn't do it, and such little women's rights back then backed her into a corner on the whole thing.
