I've Been Smiling a Lot Lately

I hear little footsteps padding to my side of the bed and crack open an eye to see a young girl with spiral black curls and electric blue eyes. Her pig tails are lopsided and she's carrying a small purple blanket with her thumb in her mouth. I smile at her and open my arms.

"What's up Lou?" I ask her quietly as not to wake up her mother, my wife.

"I had a bad dream," she confesses as she crawls into my arms and buries herself into my chest.

"What was it about?" I start to rub her back soothingly as she starts her story about a giant pig with polka dots chasing her around on an orange bird. I listen intently until I hear her breathing even out. I smile down at her angelic face and scoop her up to bring her back to her room.

The bed creaks as I stand and I cringe at the noise hoping not to wake Rory. I check on her and all she does is change positions and groan a little. I smile and carry Lou back into the room she shares with her younger sister, Sophia.

I look at the door and smile at the door sign that says,

Laura Louise
&
Sophia Lynn
,

in fancy cursive writing. This, as you can imagine, was bought by Emily Gilmore.

The sign is a sparkly purple with a gold outlining. I push their half-open door open all the way and carry Lou to her bed. I carefully lay her under her purple covers and pull them up to her chin. I then notice that little Sophie is standing in her crib gurgling.

"Hey baby," I coo to her and lift her out of the crib. She giggles and makes raspberries with her mouth. I laugh quietly at her and sit in the rocking chair we have positioned in the corner.

As I start to rock her, I sing 'The Guns of Brixton', mine and Rory's song, to her.

I hear light footsteps come to a stop in the doorway and look up to see my beautiful wife with the moonlight shining on her face.

Rory starts to sing with me as she makes her way into the room and onto the arm of the rocking chair.

We finish up the song and she leans down to kiss me square on the lips. I smile as we part and get up to put Sophia back in her crib seeing as she has once again fallen asleep.

I've been smiling a lot lately.

We have been married for ten years this Sunday. Lou is six years old and Sophie is nine months old. I couldn't be happier than I am at the age of 35 married with two kids and three books published.

I turn back around and wrap my arms around Rory's waist as she wraps hers around my stomach and leans her head on my chest. We walk silently back to our room and quickly get under the covers. I pull her to me by the waist and kiss her forehead. He entwines our legs and snuggles deeply into my chest comfortably.

"Love you, Ror," I whisper.

"Love you, too, Jess," she replies and kisses my chest affectionately.

We both drift easily into sleep a few moments later.

Yeah, I've been smiling a lot lately.
