Into The Quiet Night

by lenne18

February 14.

Valentine's Day.

A bespectacled woman with blue hair walks through the university campus alone. She shivered as the cold air of the night embraced her.

The woman, Shizune Hakamichi, looks like the ideal woman, beauty and brains, except that she's also deaf. But her disability didn't let her down and instead, she used it as motivation for her to try her best in every thing she does. She is naturally very good in academics and is popular with others. However, her condition prevents her from communicating well with others even with her hired interpreter helping her.

In short, she feels lonely. Her boyfriend since high school, Hisao Nakai, is too busy with his studies in another university far from here. He couldn't afford to spend some time with her as of now.

Shizune looked around the campus and saw many different couples. It looks like she stumbled upon the so called "lover's lane."

'I feel so lonely...'

A sigh escaped her lips.

'I miss him...'

She isn't really a romantic so she was startled at her line of thinking. She doesn't really know how to be a good girlfriend but she does try. She likes him too much to break up with him.

She took out her cellphone and messaged him.

[Hey, are you free right now? Can we talk? I miss you...]

Couples filled the area pretty quickly. Shizune walked away briskly. It's no use in getting any more jealous.

Shizune arrived at the administration building near the university entrance. Feeling tired, she sat on the stairs. She pulled out the cat doll peeking out of her bag. She always brings it with her whenever she can and despite sticking out like a sore thumb, nobody questions her about it.

The memories of the school festival came flooding through her head. A sweet memory before Hisao asked her to be his girlfriend. She had already known at that time that she really liked him especially since he can keep up with her remarks.

She took out her cellphone again. No messages.

'Hisao...'

Shizune hugged her cat doll. Other memories came rushing in. The game of Risk. The school festival. Tanabata. Summer break. Graduation. Tears formed in her eyes as memories came flooding past.

She wasn't really emotional but times like this makes her wistful. If only she spent more romantic times with him...

A tap on her shoulder snapped her out of her reverie. She looked at the hand as it was joined by another one. Together, they started moving, forming familiar gestures.

'Is that sign language?'

[Can you tell me what you think?]

The hands are familiar. Looking up towards their owner, she saw Hisao, smiling.

Shizune stood up and hugged Hisao with all of her might. She could feel his arms wrapping around her.

No words are needed.

No thoughts are signed.

No questions are asked.

The stars shine brightly upon the reunited lovers, silently blessing their future together.
