Prologue
It was a bright sunny afternoon as Tom Riddle strutted around the orphanage. He enjoyed the startled looks the younger children gave him, and the respectful space the older children kept away. Tom was known as someone not to cross, what with his devious mind, nasty temper, and uncanny ability to do weird things.
As he was strutting down the corridor he noticed a girl he had never seen before. She looked to be a few years younger than him, about 6 years old, with flaming red hair and bright green eyes. Her plaid jumper was slightly worn but of good quality. He passed her off as the daughter of one of the many parents looking to adopt.
As he got closer however he noticed that her eyes were dead, as if she were a doll. Looking into her eyes he felt his stomach drop out. He knew that feeling, for years he had existed in his own world after being dumped into this place, unwanted and ignored.
Tom decided to make sure this girl didn't end up like him. She was too innocent and sweet to go through that alone.
The years went on, and Tom grew extremely attached to the girl, they did everything together. So when his letter to Hogwarts came, he refused. Hogwarts however was adamant e attend. Owl after owl came, but he burned every single letter without opening them.
Realizing that the letters were being ignored, Hogwarts sent their emissary, Professor Dumbledore, to convince the boy. Dumbledore tried to talk to the boy about the wonders of Hogwarts, but Tom simply ignored him. The longer Dumbledore talked, the more upset Tom became until he had finally had enough.
Dumbledore could feel the power accumulating in the boy and it excited him. For one so young to be so powerful was extremely rare, and would be a lovely asset to the school. The boy coldly told the professor that it was time for him to leave, and without waiting for a response Tom left the room.
Dumbledore was now so obsessed with possessing the boy that he returned several times during the net week, carefully hidden under an old invisibility cloak, to spy on young Tom and discover the reason he refused to go to Hogwarts. He was more than surprised to discover that Tom's reason was nothing more than a girl.
The girl seemed incredibly familiar but Dumbledore couldn't place her. He wracked his brain all night long but still nothing. He put the orphanage project on hold and worked on persuading other children around the country to join the school.
Three weeks after his first meeting with Tom Riddle, Dumbledore returned to the school to try again with Tom Riddle.
He crossed across the yard to where the two children lay sprawled on the grass looking at cloud shapes. The girl saw him first. She sat bold upright and glared fire at him.
"Stay away from him! He's mine not yours! Go find someone else to fill your silly school!" she screamed at him.
But he barely heard what she said, he had finally figured out who she was.
