Summary Gabriel finds his true vessel already inhabited.
Warning(s) spoilers for the whole series are possible, mild torture (considering the whole snake venom bit)
Notes Loki is a shape shifting god from Norse mythology. Before the Ragnarök, he kills the god Baldr and for this, he is bound by his own son's entrails and forced to feel excruciating pain when never venom from a snake drops into a bowl that his wife Sigyn must empty when full. This fic was totally going to be about something else and then this just kind of happened to it. Probably AU, but since we don't really know yet, we'll just go with pre-series. I chose Loki because he's the reason people think Gabriel sounds a horn to start the Apocalypse even though the Bible says no such thing.
Vessel
He was the third brother. Well, not really, but he's been around humans for so long it's too easy to think of his days in heaven in human familiar terminology instead of the cold definition of brother that angels throw around. Michael was the oldest with Lucifer bucking right at his heels. The two of them were always in some sort of power play. Then there was Castiel, younger and weaker than Gabriel, but tagging along nonetheless, probably out of admiration for Michael. If they had been humans, Gabriel might have tried to slip Castiel worms and tell him they were moving pasta, but angels do not eat nor trick. Actually, they did not do much of anything but fight as far as Gabriel was aware.
Then that happened. God cast Lucifer down and it just all started to break down. Michael became an ass, not that he had not always been somewhat of a hard butt, and everyone was walking on eggshells. The trenches began to appear, a war was beginning to be realized. What used to be power struggles were becoming fear. Only angels can kill angels and no one fully understood what was occurring.
So Gabriel left. He did not have to physically fall, just manipulate. He had walked amongst humans for decades when he made the decision. It was the height of the plague brought on by Pestilence while Michael searched Earth for Lucifer to kill him and place him in Hell for Eternity. Everyone and everything seemed to be dying and there was nothing he could do. A gurgle caught his attention nearby. Gabriel stepped carefully into the foliage and parted back a bush to see a man dying from snake venom.
The man's costuming was bizarre and he looked upon Gabriel without fear. "I must…sound the horn."
Gabriel knelt down and surveyed the man's shriveling legs. His wrists were bound with what looked like rotted human entrails. "I can heal you," he stated, "but only if you allow me this vessel."
"Ragnarök…I…" the man was trapped in whatever spell held him to this place. Gabriel could sense the ties. He knew he could break them.
"I will let you control the body until your death," Gabriel stated. "Once you are killed, I will take it as my own."
The man considered this, writhing again from the venom that was not near. He looked up at Gabriel, his eyes straining not to squint as the venom continued to drip elsewhere. "My…body…vessel…" The pain was intense as though Sigyn had emptied the bowl to begin collection once again.
"Is also mine," Gabriel stated, "and once Ragnarök is complete will be wholly that. Your followers will cease."
"Speak my name and we'll make our deal," the man stated. "You must know who I am, what this body will know to do." He relaxed ever so minutely as the bowl began to fill, dulling the stab of each drop. "That will be this vessel's permission."
Gabriel nodded and spoke, "Loki." In that moment, he left the temporary body he chose and entered into his true vessel, sitting back to fall off Heaven's radar and watch Loki before he could command the vessel as his own.
