A Little Spit, A Lotta Luck!
A/N: For the challenge, going with the photo, of Doc and Kitty fishing by the river bank. I went with an idea that crossed my mind. It's a last minute idea, so I went with it.
Matt was once again out of town, hauling a prisoner off to Hayes. Dodge had been relatively quiet. Kitty, knowing Doc was feeling restless, agreed to go fishing with him. Festus had been off hunting so she offered to go and keep him company.
In a joking tone, "Come on, Curly. You just might learn a little something." She cajoled, laughing at him.
"Young Lady, that will be the day when a woman will teach a man how to fish." Now swiping his mustache, tossing his hat on his head, "Well, if we're going, come on."
The two rode off to Spring Creek. They stopped at a clearing. Kitty spread out a blanket. "There." She said as she began pulling out a basket.
Doc looked puzzled. "What? What's this?"
Chuckling back at him, "Curly, in case you've forgotten, I've known you, Matt and Festus a long time. And if I'm going to spend the day out here with you," she was now smirking at him, "I don't want to starve."
"Young Lady, I'll have you know I'm an avid fisherman."
She was now laughing. "Is that a fact?"
Scrunching his nose, "Yes, Ma'am, it is." Doc was now walking towards the river bank with his rod, getting comfortable, tossing his line in the water.
Kitty sat along side him. Doc watched as she placed small pieces of what he thought was meat on her hook. "What's that?"
"Oh, this? Bacon fat."
"Bacon fat?" He repeated.
"Uh huh. It's a little trick I learned when I was a girl."
He just shook his head, laughing.
"Curly, this is nice time alone, just the two of us."
Nodding, "Yeah, honey, it is."
Suddenly, Kitty leaned forward, spitting into the water.
Doc looked shocked. "Young lady, what in thunder..."
Raising her brow, "What?"
"Did you just spit in the river?" He asked.
"Uh huh. I did for luck." She answered, smiling back at him.
"I guess you learned that as a girl as well?"
"Uh huh. I did."
"Kitty Russell, you never cease to amaze me."
Now laughing, "Doc, you remember Thad Ferrin? The little boy I cared for, Tucker Ferrin's boy. Well, I showed him this little trick and it helped him."
Furrowing his brow, "Oh, now, Kitty honey…"
Just then, Kitty's line began to tug. As she pulled it in, she glanced over at him. "Doc, look. I have a bite. It worked! Here, help me. This one must be big."
As he helped her pull it in his eyes widened, Doc's heart sunk. "Well, I'll be."
"What, Doc?"
"Look at this fish, I've been trying to catch this fish ever since Sa..." Now his voice dwindled off.
Again Kitty fought back a smile. "Oh, your big one that got away, huh?"
"It didn't get away! It was stolen!"
"Hummmm… By a woman, if I remember correctly." Now tilting her head and smiling at him. "And if I also remember correctly. I shared my little secret trick with Dr. Sam as well."
He was now smiling ear to ear and tugging on his ear and swiping his mustache. "I think you said you brought something in that basket?"
Laughing, "Yeah, Curly, fried chicken, potato salad and apple pie. "
"Well, let's eat. I'm hungry."
Kitty couldn't stop laughing.
Later, when they returned to Dodge, Matt, Kitty, Doc and Festus all gathered around the table. Kitty had prepared supper.
As she laid out the tray of fish, "Kitty, this looks great." Matt smiled. "I guess you were busy while I was gone."
"Oh, Doc and I went fishing. He thought he'd teach me a few tricks." Doc was just lowering his gaze. "But, it turns out, we did quite well on our outing."
"Oh?"
"Uh huh. Isn't that right, Curly? All it took was a little spit and a lotta luck."
