As Hughes fell to the floor, he couldn't help but feel almost calm and reassured. Sure, he wouldn't' ever be able to feel the sweet caress of his wife's skin or the beautiful lilt in his daughter's voice, but he took comfort in one realization. At least my family will be alright, he thought. As a soldier, he knew it was a possibility he could die in the line of duty, so he had made sure every soldier and state alchemist knew his beloved wife, knew his sweet daughter, but most importantly, they would all know how much they meant to him. He hoped that would be enough to keep them safe and happy. As happy as they could be with his death.
He winced as pain rang throughout his frame, emanating from the one bullet wound left to him by whatever that thing was that had shot him. He wondered if it was an alchemist that was changing its appearance, but he knew that was out; human transmutation wasn't just illegal, but extremely taxing. The creature had done it without batting an eye.
He wondered how long his murder would go unsolved, but he supposed it didn't matter; he knew his murderer would be caught eventually. Colonel Mustang and the Elric brother's wouldn't let his death be in vain. They would avenge it as surely as he would theirs.
"I'm sorry Gracia, live on without me. Elicia, be strong." With those final words that no one would ever hear, the light left those dark eyes and Hughes was dead.
