Tom Nook huffed and puffed as he chased the hyperactive young boy around his store. True, this boy had done well in paying off his mortgage, and was only a few payments away from having a statue erected in his honour, but there were also certain… drawbacks to him. Currently, Tom Nook was experiencing one of those drawbacks.
"YOU'LL NEVER CATCH ME, NOOK!" Screamed the boy as he ran around the various tables, knocking over objects and screaming like a loon.
With another sigh, Tom began to realise why Crazy Redd had set up his shop in a tent and always kept on the move. At least that way, you'd meet a lot less nutcases who would run around your store when it was time to close.
Tom snapped out of his thoughts when he heard another loud smash, and headed to where it came from. Hearing laughter and steps, the two signs that the hyperactive boy had been there, Tom came across a brand new green lamp, broken into five pieces. Tom gave a large sigh. The boy always paid for things the next day, but every night, the same thing would happen. He would charge in just as Tom was about to close the store, and run around until eventually, Tom caught him.
With another sigh as Tom saw the floor changing colour, meaning that the boy had knocked a carpet off it's shelf, he began to think, "I'm getting too old for this," and his mind drifted back to when he was a child…
"Tom, what do you want to be when you grow up?"
"I want to be… a shopkeeper!"
The other animal-children at the Animal day-care centre gave Tom funny looks as he gave different answers to them. They all wanted to be firemen or policemen, or in some cases, superheroes.
"That's an unusual choice dear," remarked the teacher, "Why do you say that?"
"My whole family have been shopkeepers," Tom answered jollily, "And one day, the business will be passed down to me!"
Tom remembered that day well. The other animals had made fun of him for wanting to be a shopkeeper, but he'd stuck with his dream. Now, he was chasing a boy through his shop.
"Hey Nook, how much for this vase?" the boy asked, before a loud smash was heard, and the boy quickly added, "Never mind…"
Tom sighed. He had been the shopkeeper of millions of villages in his time, but never had he met such a hyperactive child. Then again, he thought, would he really be happy doing any other job? Would he be any more jolly rescuing people from fires or arresting dangerous criminals? No, he wouldn't. Tom smiled as he thought of how truly happy his current life really was. The majority of his customers were friendly, everyone came to him to buy things, and he was living a quiet, simple life, just as he always wanted. As the boy accidentally charged into him, Tom was still smiling as he escorted the lad out of the door, and said three short sentences both truthfully and proudly.
"Thank you! Do come again! I look forward to seeing you!"
