"Charolette! Are you ready to go?" A young male voice sounded from a room within a hotel. The owner of the voice was a teenager named Chester. He was about 15, sported a black hoodie, with a red pokéball emblazoned upon its center, and wore black sneakers. Charolette, the girl in question, was a Gardevoir, roughly his age, but stood about half an inch shorter than him. Like most psychic Pokémon, she was gifted with the ability to communicate telepathically.

-Yes.- She telepathically chirped, her expression mirroring her tone. It was New Years Eve in Hoenn, and there was going to be a fireworks display in Mauville City. This would be Charolette's first time actually attending a fireworks display, as last year, she was still wild. She could still observe, but barely. To her the fireworks were nothing more than little splashes of color on the horizon, dancing, intermingling, then fading. But now, she would get to see them at a much closer distance.

Chester giggled at her enthusiasm, closing his eyes momentarily. Reopening them, he began to speak, "Well then, let's hit the road!"

Charolette and Chester exited their house, and set off to route 117. Both Charolette and Chester were happy residents of Verdanturf Town, having taken up residence in the small house to the left of Wanda's. They had managed to get a cheap price for it from the lady who had lived there previously.

Thankfully, route 117 was a straight shot to Mauville City, so the pair made their way out of Verdanturf, down the route. Neither of them spoke, but it wasn't an awkward silence.

They stopped outside of Mauville City, along with the rest of the crowd, people and pokémon alike, everyone's head looking up at the sky, illuminated by only the stars. Charolette and Chester heard people whispering, idle talk, and the occasional chirp of Pokémon conversation.

-Chess, will it start soon?- Charolette asked her trainer eagerly. Chester chuckled slightly, amused to hear her so eager. He glanced at his watch.

"Don't worry, Charolette," he began. "It'll begin in a moment." No sooner had the word 'moment' left his lips, they heard a loud fizzling sound, and a beam of light shot up into the sky, exploding into a mixture of red and green lights, a loud 'bang' following a split second after. After the first firework, no noise was made, the silence interrupted only by the noise the fireworks made, and the occasional exclamation from both people and pokémon. Chester smiled at the display, then turned his head towards Charolette, who was standing completely still, looking towards the display in awe, her mouth slightly ajar.

"So, are you enjoying this, Charolette?" Chester asked her. Charolette started at his question, and turned to him, a smile on her face.

-Yes!- She chirped once more, nodding her head. -It looks so different than what it looked like in the forest.- Chester smiled at her response.

"Well, enjoy this while it lasts, 'cause we won't be seeing these for another year." Charolette smiled, and nodded. Turning her head back to the fireworks, her hand found its way to Chester's. Her smile grew when she felt his hand clasp hers. She didn't know what the next year would bring, but she knew one thing, with Chester by her side, she felt like this next year would be her best one yet.

"It's January, now." Chester's voice pierced her thoughts. "Happy new year, Charolette."
