Disclaimer: I do not own Star Trek, nor Pirates of the Carribean.

A/N: This is basically the story of a (very) young Jack Sparrow falling in love with a star ship, much like how I imagine Jim Kirk did. It's a bit weird, I know, and I am also aware that it could be easily continued. I have a few ideas, but it's a bit up in the air at the moment as to whether I actually write them or not. :)

I hope you enjoy!

The Binding of a Heart and Soul

Jackson Sparrow stared up at the star ship in awe.

It was only the bare bones of a star ship; little more than metal supports and basic casings wrapped around empty spaces that Jackie imagined must resound with a cold silence.

But, he also thought, that silence must be positively tingling with the promised beauty of the skeleton ship; of the future that she was destined to have. He could feel that promise, that tension, even from a fair distance and from behind a chain-link fence.

He had listened as his mother told him stories of her voyages in space; of planets with forty-two moons and days that stretched on for weeks, and of aliens with eleven eyes, or no legs, or pointy ears. He had listened and been enraptured, an unknowing prisoner to the grand universe that stretched on above him, even as he gazed up at the cold stars and imagined all those many planets orbiting them.

The stars appeared a bit warmer this night; providing a backdrop for the beginnings of the star ship that rested in the distance, large and hulking, bare but surprisingly beautiful.

"Jackie," his mother breathed into his ear, and he tightened his grasp on her arm where it rested across his collarbones, pushing back into her embrace, craving the warmth that protected him from the chill night air. "That's a star ship baby; or it will be anyway. The U.S.S Pearl; that's what that sign says she'll be when she's done."

His mother pointed to the sign on the fence, and Jackie could see lots of little print that he couldn't yet read.

"Ma," he murmured, as unwilling as his mother to shatter the evening with overly loud words, "She's beautiful."

His mother laughed, a low soft sound that warmed him just like a cup of warm cocoa would; leaving a trail of warmth that started in his throat and travelled down until it reached his stomach. Her breath fogged as it brushed past his ear.

She straightened slightly, until she was no longer bending over him, and brushed one of his chocolate curls away from his face so she could dip down and press a kiss to his temple.

"She is, isn't she?" She sounded happy as she rested her head against his; happy and somewhat wistful.

But Jackie didn't notice; he was staring out into the night at the star ship, seeing ghostly images of the elegant beauty he knew she would become, and of the worlds she would see.

Jackie and his mother stood under the cold stars on an even colder night, and as she contemplated the husband that had left them to travel the universe, Jackie willingly promised his heart and soul to a star ship that was a mere skeleton of what she would become.
