Disclaimer: I do not own anything related to CSI. Those rights belong to Jerry Bruckheimer. This is my first foray into writing CSI fan fiction, be gentle on me.
Darkness. Only darkness greets me as I wake. It appears that way at first, but my eyes slowly adjust to the dim light being reflected around me. The investigator in me tries to put the pieces together. I was attacked at a crime scene and I have woken up here. But where is here? I lay on my back on what appears to be a flat surface. Reaching over to find the source of the light, my arm connects painfully with an unknown surface above me. Glancing about I try to fathom just where I might be. As recognition dawns, my right hand grasps the source of the light.
Terror flows throughout my body as I come to fully realize my precarious situation. The surface I am lying on and the ceiling-like surface above me form just two of the four sides that create my enclosure. A cage … meant to keep me inside. Holding the fluorescent stick to the roof, I'm able to pick out the little highlights of what is above me … dirt. A lot of dirt. A scream is torn from my body before I can even stop it. I've been buried alive. Gently my left hand skitters along the base of this plexi-glass coffin before it comes into contact with two items: a tape recorder and my gun. Minutes later the message on the tape finishes playing and I have to remember how to breathe. My thoughts analyze the words that had been spoken before my eyes close. The gun is grasped firmly in my left hand now. As I lift it into view, thousands of questions flood my mind.
'What do I do?'
'Why me?'
'Will people notice I'm gone?'
'Should I pull the trigger?'
'What would the others do if I die?'
'Does Grissom know what I think of him?'
The last two thoughts stay my hand as I cry tears of frustration. The gun falls harmlessly to my left side. I won't take the easy way out. The last thought that rockets through my mind gives me a burst of hope.
'They will find me!'
