"I've been through so much..." said the dying man on the hospital bed, talking to a nurse. She tried to ignore him as she changed his IV fluids. She didn't care. She just wanted to leave and go watch the match with her boyfriend down at the pub.
"You don't know, do you?" He asked "That's right, you weren't the lovely young woman who had checked my slow, dying heartbeat."
The nurse sighed and shook her head "Mr. Smith, can you leave me to my work?"
The man ignored her "Have you got a stethoscope? Check my heartbeat. You'll see what I'm talking about."
She sighed "I suppose you're due for another checkup. What is it you have anyway?"
"I'm just old... Too old..." He said
"Right" The nurse said, taking the stethoscope from around her neck and put in the earpieces. She put the chest piece on his chest and told him to breath. She gasped at the sound of a second heartbeat coming from the left side of his chest "That's not human! What are you?"
"I'm the Doctor. And you're right, it's not human. I'm an alien called a Time Lord. I come from a planet called Gallifrey."
The nurse when wide eyed "You're bonkers if you think I'm going to believe that!"
"Exactly" The Doctor grinned
"But Doctor who, exactly? Doctor Smith?"
"No. Just the Doctor."
"You can't be 'Just the Doctor'!"
"Oh, but I can. And that's the thing about me. I never listen. I always lie. That's what got me here."
"I thought you said you were old!"
"I am. That's true. 911 years to be exact." The Doctor said with a smirk
"You're mad!"
"I know... Many refer to me as a madman with a box."
"A box? What box?"
"That's something I'll explain later. You obviously wish to leave." he said
"No, I can stay. My boyfriend will understand."
"Are you absolutely sure?"
"Yes"
"Okay. I think I want to start it like this." He said
"Like what?"
"Once upon a time..."
