1600 LOCAL – SUNDAY
HARM'S APARTMENT
Harm reached for the phone it was time to find out his mother's
decision regarding the letters. If this stalemate dragged too long the
INS would ship Sergei back to Russia.
He dialed and braced himself for the ritual. He knew it by heart.
She'd answer…
"Harm! Darling what a surprise!" Then her first question was always…
"So! How's Mac?"
He'd say. "She's fine."
"Quite the girl isn't she."
"Don't start mom."
"She's your partner isn't she?"
"Yes." He'd admit.
"So where's the problem in asking?" she'd play the innocent. Then
and only then would they get to the reason for the contact. Whether
in person or not, single or not he and his mother played this game. He
was in the thick of his relationship with Annie and she did it. And being
with Rene never stopped her either.
He heard his mother say. "Hello?"
With the ritual over she said, "So to what do I deserve this call?"
"Can't a son call his mother?"
"A son yes. You gallivant all over the globe and hardly have time."
She replied.
Harm took the plunge. "It's about Sergei mom. Have you decided?"
There was a pause then she said. "This is hard Harm. I don't have
many letters from your father. Most were packages that came tided
and not licked. I have less than five letters and they are precious." His
heart sank she was going to say no. "Can't they use something else?
Can't you give blood?"
"No mom." He'd explained this to her already. "The genetic markers
must come from the parent a sibling will not do."
Still she remained hesitant.
"Mom." He said softly. "You have to decide. Say yes. Say no. But say
something."
"Will hair do?" she asked.
That stalled him. "Hair?"
"Yes. I have your father's personal items in storage. If I can find a hair
brush will a hair sample do?"
"I… I don't know." He stuttered.
"Well while I search you find out." She instructed.
"OK and mom?"
"Yes dear."
"Thank you."
"You are welcome. And son be careful of what you wish for you may
get it." She said cryptically "Give Mac my love." She hung up and said
to herself "Even if you won't give her yours."
