Acceptance
Merlin is working for Arthur for more than 2 years already. They have survived many obstacles together. He didn't mind that he was not credited for all of his doings but there is just one thing that he wants. He wants to be appreciated by Arthur for just being his servant and just by being at his side.
The first day Merlin met Arthur, they did not really get along well. Arthur is an arrogant spoiled prat and he treated him in a not very nice way. But when he started to become Arthur's servant, that's when he realized that Arthur has this other side that can be funny, kind and caring.
As he continued to work for Arthur and had saved his royal backside for God knows how many times, he started to have these feelings for him. Feelings that can never be reciprocated because of their status and because the prat is in love with sweet Guinevere.
Merlin did not mind that at all. He continued to work and work and just pretend that he doesn't feel anything for Arthur. But as time passes, Arthur starts being friendlier to him and treated him like he's an equal. Merlin fell for him harder and now he can't deny it anymore. He is in love with his master, his prince, his once and future king and most of all, his best friend.
He did not want to risk their friendship so he just acts like nothing is wrong and everything is fine when he saw him talking to Gwen in the corridors. But as he was about to look away and pretend that his heart is not hurting, Arthur noticed him watching them and he smiled at him.
Later that day in Arthur's chambers, Merlin served him his dinner and noticed that Arthur is in a very good mood. He asked him why and Arthur said that Gwen finally agreed for them to be an official secret couple and that she doesn't love Lance anymore, that her heart only belongs to Arthur now. Merlin felt his heart breaking into tiny little pieces and tears building up in his eyes. He forced himself not to cry in front of Arthur but Arthur noticed the sudden change of Merlin's expression. He asked Merlin what's wrong but Merlin did not answer and just asked if he could retire for the night because he is not feeling well. Arthur agreed.
That night, Merlin cried himself to sleep and in his deep slumber he dreamt about the future where Arthur is the Once and Future King with Queen Guinevere by his side and in his other side, Merlin, the Court Sorcerer. The people and kingdom rejoiced for their king and queen, and everyone was happy.
When he woke up, he just accepted the truth that nothing can ever happen between him and Arthur. He'll always just gonna be his servant and maybe a friend but nothing more. So even if it hurts, he will stay by Arthur's side until the day he dies because that's the real meaning of love for him.
