Are you, Are you

The wind blew. I heard his voice chant. I knew it wouldn't go away.

Coming to the tree

The guilt started to hit me.

Where they strung up a man they say murdered three

The line repeated in my head, and I wanted to curl up and hide

Strange things did happen here

I ran into my bedroom. Threw the covers over me, and tried to drown out the rest of the song

No stranger would it be

The song haunts me, I still try to hide.

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree

I knew I had to leave.

Are you, Are you

I went for the last important thing in my life.

Coming to the tree

I went into my son's bedroom, to find him sleeping.

Where the dead man called out for his love to flee

I started to cry, but knew I must be strong.

Strange things did happen here

I tucked him in.

No stranger would it be

I gave him one last kiss on the cheek.

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree

Now I must do what is needed to be done.

Are you, Are you

I started to run.

Coming to the tree

I followed his sweet singing voice.

Where I told you to run so we'd both be free

I ran through the woods looking for one thing.

Strange things did happen here

Twigs snapped under my bare feet.

No stranger would it be

I ran as swiftly as I could, trying to find my one thing.

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree

I was going to find the tree.

Are you, Are you

When I found the tree, I knew I would be free

Coming to the tree

I found your body, waiting for me.

Wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me

I took out some rope, and made what I need.

Strange things did happen here

I pushed a rock over to a branch right next to yours.

No stranger would it be

I got ready, hoping you would forgive me.

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree

I was about to jump, but then you stopped singing, So I sang myself.

"Are you, Are you."

I said while preparing myself

"Coming to the tree."

I put the rope around my neck

"Where they strung up a woman they say really murdered three."

I sang right before I jumped, thinking about my last thoughts.

Strange things did happen here

I am really sorry.

No stranger would it be

I hope you can forgive me.

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree

I didn't mean for you too get blamed for what I have done.

Twenty Years Later

A young man with the last name of Everdeen sang a song to his kids.

He knew this song very well.

His mother sang it, right before she disappeared.

This was right after the death of his dad.

His dad was said to have murdered three.

Though his dad said he wasn't guilty.

His dad was still hung.

Though the young man knew this song was about his dad.

He sang it, even if it was banned.

Though he never told a soul, about his mother running free.
