"You shouldn't have come".
Ginny stood beside Hermione. She could see her eyes were downcast with the same despair and hollowed look. The same look she has seen Hermione possess for the past year, every time they returned to Draco's grave sight. The difference now was that Ginny was cradling a baby in her arms. Scorpius Draco Malfoy was just a few months old and he was starting to look like his father.
As they stood there, Ginny could see how Hermione was remembering that fateful day all over again. The day Draco was lost to them.
"He tried to fight as best he could, but he just wasn't strong enough. He shouldn't have gone alone". Grinny tried to placate her again. She knew it was a fruitless effort but nonetheless, it was a way to try and appease her friend. Although, as of late, Hermione seemed to be getting worse and worse.
"He wouldn't have if I hadn't lied so blatantly to him", Hermione closed her eyes because the guilt was making her bitter. Today was a year of the day that she wished she could change.
"I just wish he knew the truth. I lied Ginny, and day by day its been killing me to remember that I denied him the one thing he wanted to hear me say to him", Hermione's voice sounded pained and even more chilling than having to stand before Draco's grave everyday, at the same time, for the past year.
"What do you mean?", Ginny said startled. She was afraid to hear her answer. What could be worse than to see the father of your child die before your eyes in a battle?
When Ginny discovered that Hermione was pregnant, with Draco Malfoy's heir, to say she was stunned to silence was an understatement. She didn't pry as to how or why. The Brightest Witch of Their Age always knew what she was doing and why, or so Ginny believed. Ginny never ventured into the details of their tryst and suffice it to say, Hermione was not compelled to share them. She had been guarded but she assumed it had to do with the pain of losing the father of her child and having to raise him alone. She had been with Hermione all through the pregnancy, during the birth and after Scorpius was born. She thought the darkness and emptiness in Hermione's eyes would leave her after seeing her son for the first time. How wrong was she.
"He lost all hope and didn't fight back", Hermione started to tremble when she said this.
"What? Why? What are you saying?", Ginny urged her on while seeing her friend start to break apart. Hermione Granger's eyes showed how much her heart was shattering.
"He told me he loved me", Hermione croaked.
"He said that? But, then if you loved each other, he would've fought back. He would've fought for Scorpius and you!", Ginny's voice was practically screaming at her.
That's when the truth, set her free.
"That's just it Ginny", Hermione's cheeks were stained with tears.
"I couldn't say it back", Hermione was looking at her baby now as she said this. The weight of the truth was staring right back at her while she looked at those same grey eyes.
"He told me he loved me and I couldn't say it back. He died because he thought I didn't love him. How wrong I was".
Hermione fell to her knees as if asking her son for forgiveness. She looked at his grey eyes as if seeing Draco and whispered: "I love you, Draco. I'll always love you".
Little did she know that Draco was there with her and had heard those blissful words he yearned for, even in death.
