to the adventure unseen —
She was alone outside, sitting on the cracked porch and waiting for something that wasn't going to come.
He'd appeared, out of the navy blue that streaked the invisible night sky. He watched the lovely frown smother her face.
And he said, What are you doing, out here all by yourself?
She'd looked at him then, not surprised or aghast. The life she was leading didn't call for that.
She let her frown drift to the shining sword-grey of the plates.
She said, What are you doing here, not floating in the Lifestream?
He let a headlight smile leave dots in her eyes.
He said, Watching you be so blue.
Her eyes shifted, catching the color that landed in her ears. It was everywhere, that blue. There was even blue in his eyes.
But his eyes were vivid with a different shine. They didn't glow with mako icing or dull pupils.
No, oh, no. They took her so far away from the blue she had been waiting for.
He tilted his head, and her face wasn't wilting.
And he said, Let me take you away from here.
His hands were on hers, and the porch melted back together.
— for the show must go on.
