Chapter One: The Incident
Kagome sighed for, what felt like, the hundredth time that night as she listened to her three best friends beg her to go out with them. She had told them 'no' the first time they asked, but they weren't letting up.
She was in her last year of medical school and half of her grade would be determined by this essay that was due tomorrow. It was required to have a minimum of fifty pages and she had five left to go.
If she went out with them she knew nothing good was going to come out of it for her. She wished she would've finished the essay last week, then she wouldn't be going through this.
"Aw come on, 'Gome. Go out with us, just for a little while," Eri begged.
"Yea, come on Kagome… it'll be fun," Yuka butted in.
"It won't be the same without you," Ayumi pouted.
Kagome looked at her three bestfriends and felt guilty. They really wanted her to come and she hated letting anyone down, especially her friends and family.
She looked at her elegant clock on the wall that read '10:23pm', then down at her computer that displayed her report.
'I could go for a couple of hours, that won't hurt.' she thought making up her mind. "Well… only for a little while, right?" she finally gave in, smiling up at them.
"Yes!" they said in unison getting excited.
People were littered everywhere drinking, dancing, and having fun. The four girls walked through the club, three out of four, dancing to the music as they made their way to the VIP section. Going up the stairs to the next level Kagome watched how excited her friends were and it cheered her up a little. Despite her not wanting to be there she perked up and put a smile on her face.
Getting to the top of the stairs, they spoke to the bouncer they all knew to well before going through the double doors of the VIP section. Once they were through Eri and Yuka immediately went over to the bar to get drinks, which was stationed to the left. While Kagome and Ayumi went over to the table they had reserved.
Kagome looked around the club bored, really. She was tired and didn't really want to be out at the moment. She knew she would be up all night finishing her paper because her professor wouldn't want to hear any excuses if she didn't turn it in. Kagome's partying days were over once she almost got kicked out of college but since it was Eri's early birthday celebration she decided to make an exception. What could it hurt, it wasn't like she was going to make a habit of it.
"We got drinks!" Yuka yelled as her and Yuka sat down four fruity looking drinks.
The four of them grabbed their glasses and held it up.
"To many years of friendship... And IT'S MY BIRTHDAY WEEKEND BITCHES!" Eri yelled excited.
Laughing they threw their drinks back, beside Kagome who preferred to sip her drink. She wasn't trying to get drunk or tipsy for that matter.
As her three Bestfriend went to the dance floor Kagome found herself looking down from the balcony that overlooked the club. They were all having so much fun, she smiled to herself.
Looking around her eyes met with red ones. Startled she looked away for a fee then back at the man and when her eyes clashed with red again she knew he was watching her. She stopped leaning on the pole and stood up as she gave the man a once over. He had long hair that was pulled into a braid, he skin was nicely tanned, and he was lean and fit. He wasn't bad looking but Kagome wasn't interested. So she decided to go back over to her designated table to sit.
"You're no fun!" Yuka yelled over the music pulling Kagome onto the dance floor before she could take a seat.
Kagome smiled and thought, 'what the hell, it's Eri's birthday. Why am I being such a party pooper?'
She danced with her bestfriends and let loose, being mindful of her drinks. She made sure to stop after her second glass was gone, since she still had to do her paper when she got home.
Kagome didn't know how many songs they had danced to, but she was starting to get tired.
"What time is it?" she asked herself looking at her watch. Her eyes went wide when she saw how late it was. "Oh no, guys I have to go. It's almost 1 o'clock," she yelled over the music hurriedly giving them all hugs.
"Do you want us to walk you home?" Ayumi asked concerned.
"Yea Kagome, it's pretty late," Eri said not liking the idea of her bestfriend walking home at this hour.
"No, I'll be fine. Have fun. It's your birthday!" Kagome smiled.
After giving them all hugs again she quickly exited the club. Walking as fast as her long slender legs would let her. Kagome couldn't believe he had lost track of time like that. She should've been home.
Cursing to herself, she pulled out her car keys then froze when she heard someone scream followed by crying and please of help. Looking around cautious, she tried to figure out where the voice was coming from. Continuing her slow walk she approached an alley and the crying seemed to get louder. She froze again looking at her car that was parked a little down from the alley.
Groaning inwardly her thoughts raced, 'Why didn't I just park in the garage.' now clutching her coach bag to her side. 'Don't look; it doesn't concern you, Kagome. Just walk pass and go home.' She thought as she neared the alley but as soon as she got to the entrance she heard a gunshot. Freezing up, eyes wide, she spun and looked down the alley, not being able to help it.
A big figure stood over top of a women, beat up pretty bad, lying in the alley by the dumpster. Her clothes were ripped and her hair dishevelled.
A man had clearly rapped a harlot and decided to kill her, for some reason.
The figure turned to look at Kagome a there eyes met as a look on shock appeared across the man's face. Before he could even get the gun aimed at Kagome all the way, she took off running.
She had been her schools track star all throughout high school so she had no problem picking up speed. She ran right past her car as she slipped out of her heels so she could run faster, leaving them behind. She didn't dare look back as she cut through alleys and side streets to lose the murderer. Seeing her apartment in the distance gave her a boost of adrenaline as she picked up her speed.
"Please don't be following me," she mumbled as she got to the entrance and ran in.
She didn't worry about signing in as she ran up the steps instead of taking the elevator. She ran all the way to the fourth floor and opened the door. She didn't go in but she slammed it before continuing up the steps to the eighth floor running as lightly as possible. She quickly but quietly ran to her apartment number and slipped in, locking both locks and putting her back against the door as she caught her breath. Praying to Kami that they fell for her trick.
"You idiot! How could you let her get away!" A man by the name of Hiten yelled at his brother.
"Did you see how fast she was running!" Manten yelled back. "I didn't see you running after her!" he said looking out the car window.
"Well did you see where she went?" Hiten snapped looking around.
"I think she went in that building," he answered and they both got out the car, double parking, and hurriedly ran into the apartment complex. "Where to?" he asked.
"Stairs," Hiten stated and they both took off. "Bingo," he said when he heard her running up. He took off taking the steps two and three at a time.
A door slammed as they got closer to the third floor. "She must be on the next level," Manten said smiling as he knew they had her.
They exited the stair case on the fourth floor and each ran in a different direction.
"Shit!" Hiten yelled when they met up. "She got away."
"She dropped her wallet," Manten said taking it out of his pocket and going for her id.
"Kagome Higurashi, huh?" Hiten smiled as he looked at the pretty dark haired girl. "You can run… but you can't hide," he said chuckling.
So how was it? Please review and let me know...
