RAINBOW LULLABY
He doesn't know when exactly he went from wanting to be with Finn Hudson, to wanting to just be Finn Hudson, but suddenly he's Kurt-the-lumberjack with a cheerleader-girlfriend, and a Titans football jersey sharing closet space with his treasured Marc Jacobs. He drives a massive black SUV and shaves his non-existent beard every morning.
His dad is quietly confused (again) but doesn't push for any kind of explanation (again) and reiterates his earlier acceptance speech (again). In glee club he flirts with Rachel and Mercedes, who laugh uncomfortably, unsure of how to handle Not-a-flaming-homo-Kurt. Mr Schuester rearranges the songs they're working on with a curious frown, but accomodates his lower register without a word.
His entire world has changed, he thinks, and all that's left is for all the players to take their marks, redrawn on a shifted stage. It all falls apart at the sight of a murderous Santana Lopez, screaming Spanish curses in his face. Strangely it isn't until Head Bitch Quinn Fabray pulls her off him with a sharp glare and a harshly whispered "Take her home, now" that his world finally (mercifully) tilts back to normal.
He is instantly disgusted by his outfit; he can feel the hives forming. He's ripping the faded baseball-cap off his hair, which hangs sad and limp, while silently lamenting the state of his roots. His frantic movements stills when his eyes catch fierce hazel. The air is sucked out of the hallway, and he feels lightheaded, but it's different to his earlier euphoria. Because even in his delusional bubble he's heard the rumours.
McKinley's second most popular blonde was pregnant. He spares a split-second to considering it's credibility, but really there's no reason the remaining members of the Unholy Trinity would be within two feet of his sorry loser ass.
"Come with me," their queen demands, and she has dragged him into an empty classroom by the time he manages to croak out a "Yes."
Abruptly he feels like crying, the tears lingering on the surface, but what's the point? It's Brittany, who by her own admission loves every form of life, and vaguely he registers that it will probably be the only grandchild he'll ever give his sweet, slightly disillusioned dad. When he focuses back on Quinn she's smirking.
He shoots her a questioning look, before she nods back at him, as though giving him permission to speak freely.
"I'm gay," he says, shoulders unconsciously straightening, spine stiffening. He breathes a sigh of relief when the words are released, feeling lighter somehow. It hasn't been a burden, not in the traditional sense; in the way that he's always known who and what he was. But after his little, completely unforeseen identity crisis he feels more like himself (again), and that is something worth celebrating.
He hazarded a smile in Quinn's direction, giddy as a little boy. Her eyebrow arches as she waits for him to calm down. His reaffirmation of his sexuality is obviously not the reason they're ensconsed in the empty room, and he swallows as reality -or at least this part of his reality- reasserts itself.
He feels small then, like a boy waiting in vain to hear that his mother is proud of him, when it's not something he should be seeking approval for. But he is proud of himself again, and equally proud that he's no longer hiding, and at Quinn's subtle nod, he shrugs.
"What? That's what I am, right?"
"No," she says, and his stomach twists while her pale hand reaches to squeeze is shoulder. "You're a father."
Kurt thinks that that actually sounds so much better.
A/N: I don't know what this is, really. I kept thinking about the Quick-babygate, and then Kurt fake-dated Brittany, and Burt's little protection speech... and next thing I know this happened. Let me know what you think.
