"Aren't they beautiful?" Carmen commented, staring up at the sky in wonder.
"Yeah, they are." Tee agreed.
"They seem so close." Johnny added.
"My mum always used to say that they were angels." Elektra said quietly.
Nobody laughed. "Yeah, my mum said that to me once, but…I couldn't help but think that maybe they were…" Carmen trailed off.
Kitty looked at her. "Maybe they were what?"
"I thought that they were maybe…not just angels, but Guardian angels. One for each person." Carmen said.
Kitty reached out and grasped Carmen's hand. Carmen was pleasantly surprised, but smiled.
"Maybe they are." Kitty said thoughtfully.
"I've never really looked at the stars before." Rick admitted.
"I never had time to." Faith said.
"I'm glad I can look at the stars from here." Tyler said.
"Me too." Harry piped up.
"Yeah, and me." Jody agreed.
The kids all reached out to each other, all of them linking their hands.
Johnny held Carmen's hand in his and gave it a special squeeze. She blushed and smiled at him, then looked up at the stars again.
"A shooting star!" the kids suddenly shouted.
"Quick, everyone make a wish!" Kitty said.
All the kids shut their eyes and wished.
When they all opened their eyes, they just smiled and looked back up at the stars.
"This is the most magical night ever." Carmen sighed.
"I'm so glad I shared this night with you guys." Kitty said. "I love you all."
"We love you too!" the other kids chorused.
"This is definitely a memory to cherish forever." Mike said, from behind them. "I got a good picture, that's all I wanted." And with that, he left.
"That was kind of strange." Faith said.
"I'm glad he took a picture, but I'm always going to remember this night, no matter what. Because…it doesn't matter that we've been dumped, and that nobody except the care workers and the other kids really want us around…we'll always have our memories as well as each other." Rick said.
The other kids agreed, and then slowly, one by one, the lights went out. Actually, not really lights, more like the DG kids, falling asleep spread on the grass, holding hands, under the starry night.
