Central. How long had it been since the newly promoted Colonel Roy Mustang, State Alchemist, was able to breathe that fine, stale city air? It had been one year since the military had been able to take command of Ishbal, one excruciatingly long year. Mustang was forced to stay behind the extra time to ensure military supremacy, to guarantee that there would be no further uprising.

But now he was finally back in Amestris, back in his proper home. He couldn't feel more relieved to hike up back up the steps to military headquarters, located in the heart of Central. There, at the top of the stone stairway, stood a woman her blonde hair shining in the afternoon sun. When Mustang arrived at the plateau where she stood, her posture stiffened, her had raising to salute him.

"Welcome back, Colonel Mustang, sir!" she chided.

That's when Mustang noticed something different in the newly promoted 2nd Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye's appearance; her usually cropped haircut had grown into an awkward length. It was too short to be tied back, yet too long to be pinned up, the beautiful curtain of golden hair barely touching her shoulders. Mustang couldn't help himself. His fingers acted on impulse, stretching out to gently brush the locks of straw-colored hair.

"You're growing your hair out," he commented quietly. "It looks cute."

Mustang couldn't deny that he had missed the younger officer. Without her presence, the front lines of Ishbal seemed that much more unbearable, more sinisterly dark than they had been before. However, a part of him was glad that she was transferred out as soon as the war had finished; he couldn't bear to let her watch as he was forced to crush the life out of an entire civilization.

Riza swatted his hand away. "S-sir!" she stammered, a faint pink blush spreading across her face. "I think it would be a good idea to refrain from such remarks on military soil."

Roy smiled the first true smile he had been able to show since the bloody war had begun. He reached to grab Riza's small hand, and pulled her down the steps, heading away from the giant white building.

"Sir!?" she exclaimed, clearly alarmed at his sudden movements.

"We're going to lunch, and then I can speak a little more freely, no?"

"But, what about – "

"Central Command has waited a year for my return. They can wait another day,"

Mustang interrupted. "Besides, I have something a little more important to attend to at the moment."

I'm a starving author hoping for a review!
