The funeral of Soul Eater Evans was a small one. Only his friends and teachers attended, just the way he wanted it. Everyone except Shinigami-sama wore white because they all knew Soul didn't want a black funeral. Black Star didn't speak very much and Tsubaki cried steadily into a wet handkerchief. His teachers stood in a row and saluted Soul as his body was lowered into his body. Death the Kid looked down at his feet and held Liz's and Patty's hands as they cried together.
Shinigami-sama made a speech remembering the young Death Scythe. He recalled the last moments of his life, Maka and Soul's last battle with a witch. The scythe had fulfilled his promise to protect his meister as the witch lunged towards Maka. The Death God also recalled his first visit to the Evans' home. Though he was supposed to be practicing, a six year old Soul had fallen asleep at the grand piano. Shinigami-sama shook him, trying to wake him only to receive a sharp slap on his mask.
"I'm sleeping!" The boy had slapped the Death God without lifting his head up to see who it was.
"SHINIGAMI CHOP!"
"Dammit, old man!" Soul rolled on the floor in pain, clutching his bruised head.
Everyone fondly remembered their own moments with Soul. At the end of the speech, the mourners, except Maka Albarn and Shinigami-sama, dispersed. She stood in front of the tombstone with an empty stare. Her hair was down and she wore a white dress with a high collar. The girl dropped to her knees and began to cry as Shinigami-sama approached her.
"Shinigami-sama," Maka sobbed. "Why couldn't it have been me?"
"I don't know," The Death God answered sorrowfully. "All I know is that I had to take him,"
And Maka knew it was true. It wasn't Shinigami-sama's fault at all that Soul had died; he had only taken him inevitably.
"I want you to promise me something," Maka said through her tears.
"Anything,"
"When the time comes for you to take me," her hand moved towards her stomach. "Take care of our child,"
"I'll take care of him as if he was my own," the Death God promised.
Maka smiled sadly and stood up to face Shinigami-sama. She nodded and began to walk out of the cemetery.
Shinigami-sama watched Maka as she left and began to leave also when he saw Soul. He was dressed in his pinstriped suit and a red tie. Sitting upon his own tombstone, he smirked at the Death God.
"Oi, Shinigami-sama, I'm sleeping, so don't bother me," Soul snickered.
Shinigami-sama shook his head and smiled behind his mask as he left the cemetery.
