I don't own Get Backers, and while this ficlet is not necessarily AU, neither does it fall during a certain time in the manga nor animé's plot.

One Summer's Night

"Kadsuki, why are you walking so slow?"

"I'm just enjoying the night."

"That doesn't explain why you slowed down so suddenly."

"Come on, Juubei, can't you feel it? This is a perfect summer evening!"

"…"

He laughed, tucking a wayward strand of long brown hair behind his ear. "Relax, Juubei, and just listen to the night. Hear the cars on the main road, the murmur of the people talking in their homes. We passed a playground a few blocks back; don't tell me that you didn't hear the kids laughing and playing on the swings. Everyone is up at this time of night in the summer, but everything is still so calm."

"Maybe they're all too hot and tired to want to argue."

"Not at this time of night, when the sun has just set, and everything is starting to cool off. The pavement is still warm from the sun, though." He closed his eyes, smiling. "The air seems so thick, you could swim in it. Mmm…I feel like I'm floating."

"Whatever makes you happy, Kadsuki."

"I am happy! Everything is so open; everything is so peaceful."

"You still haven't explained why you've slowed down."

"What's the point in walking fast? I'm in no hurry."

The stoic man smiled at that answer, and breathed in the cool night air. With the scent of freshly-mown grass, warm asphalt, and the sound of neighbours chatting and watering their lawns, it really was rather pleasant. "You're right. No hurry."

Pleased, the slighter man stopped, and put a hand on his friend's shoulder. "Oh, Juubei, I see the first star. I really do love this time of the evening."

"You could make a wish, if you'd like."

"Do you mean like 'Star light, Star bright'?"

"Sure."

A pleased chuckle. "You have to make one, with me."

"…I know what I wish for."

"Me, too."

They strolled down the street in silence, after that, listening to the faint buzz as the streetlights turned on, and mothers called their children in for bed. Cats' eyes glowed from the shadows, and they turned the corner down an even smaller side-street.

"Ah, Juubei, here's my apartment."

"Oh."

"Thank you for walking with me."

"It's really no problem, Kadsuki. I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow, then."

"Good night."

The long-haired man let himself into the building, unlocking the door with a muted click, while the other continued down the road in the soft, balmy summer air. The stars glowed overhead, their light streaming through the branches of the tall oak trees and through the windowpanes of a darkened apartment. One star, directly overhead, twinkled as if in recognition of the same silent, unspoken desire.

I wish this night would never end.
