Their Guardian Angel

Nuriko sighed as he turned away from the sight of his lover and child. So, she had a son. And named him after the father. Maybe I should have stayed with her, he thought. Then he'd be living happily with his best friend and the child they created together.

"Well, there is one thing I can do for them. I can protect them and watch over them." He declared, more to himself than anyone else. With that, Nuriko looked at them again and his heart swelled with love for them. 'Tonight, Mikaru.'

Mikaru wiped the sweat from her forehead and continued washing the stubborn stain from the sash. Her son, Nuriko, was asleep in his bed by the open window. His sweet innocent face, the spitting image of his father, nearly made her weep. She said a silent prayer that her son would lead a happy life. Nuriko. It had been so long, since his death. The days were becoming easier to get through as her son grew. In a few more years he would want to go his own way.

Setting the sash over a metal bar by the fire, Mikaru barely noticed another presence in the room. She turned to pick up the bucket of dirty water but froze.

"Nuriko?" she gasped. He nodded and stepped closer to her and touched her hair. It is still soft as flower petals, he thought. He lifted the strands to his nose and sniffed. The scent was intoxicating.

"Mikaru." Her name was but a whisper on his lips before his descended down to place a slow, loving kiss on her mouth. Mikaru relaxed into the kiss as it was so familiar and natural to her as breathing. Nuriko was the man she loved and still. No man would be able to extract this much love from her ever again.

Again, he whispered her name when he lifted his head from hers. He looked into her eyes and smiled. "I love you, Mikaru. And I'll always be watching over you and our son. Don't let him make the same mistake I did. At least not without him knowing the outcome of mine. Be strong for him and remember, that you'll never be alone, ever."

Mikaru nodded and touched his face and leaned in for another kiss whispering 'I love you' against his lips. When she ended that last kiss, Nuriko went to the bed his son slept in and touched his hair and leaned down to place a fatherly kiss on his son's head, whispering a promise and an order into his son's ear. She closed her eyes when he finally disappeared from the room. Mikaru went to the window and watched a sparkling white streak across the sky. She woke up her son and told him to look at the sky.

"You see that white streak across the sky?" she pointed out. He nodded. "That's daddy. He visited us tonight. And I want you to remember that it'll never be just us. He'll always be watching and protecting us. No matter what."

" Mama?" she looked down at him. "We'll be fine. Papa told me so and he expects me to be good to you. He made me promise him, Mama. And I will keep that promise because we both love you too much to let you be sad."

Mikaru felt tears well up and wiped them away. She hugged her son tightly to her and then tucked him into bed. She then went to her own bed and slept.
