A/N: Hi guys! So this is my first fanfic, pleaseee be nice! I absolutely love jily so I figured why not try writing about them. Sorry this first chapter is kinda short. To be honest, I didn't really write this planning to put it up. But I did. So here you go! -Maysie
Disclaimer: I don't own these characters or the Wizarding World. That's JK Rowling.
Lily Evans didn't understand why James Potter was so fascinated by her. When she looked into the mirror, she never saw anything special. Her hair, for instance, was a pretty color but altogether unimpressive. It was always messy and frizzy and she never put it into any special hairstyles like Marlene always did. Lily didn't have great skin either. It was so pale and there were so many freckles and more than a few blemishes. She had a mental list of things wrong with her appearance and it was long, much too long to talk about here.
To be honest, Lily wasn't confident. Everyone kind of just assumed she was, because she seemed perfectly in control and perfectly comfortable with her appearance and perfectly perfect in every possible way. But no one can be perfect. Lily certainly wasn't. She a bit of a know-it-all and very bad at time management and had about a million little fears and insecurities. But Lily couldn't let anyone else see. This was how she coped.
A war was raging in the Wizarding World. Against her and all the people like her. Muggleborns and muggles and blood traitors and defenders of these people. Internal Lily was constantly screaming and crying because she was just so scared about what the Death Eaters might do. But External, Perfect Lily was confident in the demise of the dark forces. She had to be.
But really, what was the deal with Potter?
James Potter didn't understand why Lily Evans hated him so much. When he looked in the mirror, he saw a relatively attractive teenage boy. Sure he had some acne, his hair was constantly messy and his clothes were always the epitome of style (or completely without wrinkles). James also thought he was pretty funny. Yeah, he was a total dick for fourth and fifth year, but never to her. And really, who wasn't a bit of an arse when they were going through puberty? It was probably just, like, hormones or something. But the important thing was that now, in the middle of sixth year, he was an altogether nice person.
Also, James was smart. It's undeniably true. Ask anyone (okay maybe not the Slytherins). He was also pretty well-versed in those Muggle books that Lily loved, thanks to Remus, who was a huge nerd and a surprisingly close friend of Lily's. James had also stopped asking her out every day. Now it was only once a week. And he only made a huge gesture, like, once every six weeks.
To be honest, James was very close to just giving up. No matter what he did, it seemed like he would never be good enough for her. She rejected him again and again. Rejection had become such a normal thing in his life that Sirius kept an ice box in their dormitory chockfull of ice cream for James to eat after she turned him down. Again. And again. And again. James was nothing if not persistent, but enough was enough. She had taken over his life. Sixth year was the year he would give up on her. No more. He wouldn't even say her name. He wouldn't even think about her.
But really, what was the deal with Evans?
