He looked up to the sky as the warmth drained from his body in scarlet pools. Had it always been so blue? It seemed to be more beautiful than ever before, even with his blurring vision. A bird gracefully made its way across the blue abyss as voices echoed his name throughout the mountainside. He slowly turned his head in the direction they came from and smiled as two figures raced toward him. He sighed and turned back to the sky. He knew this was the last time he would see it, he knew he was dying, but a smile stayed to decorate his face in his last moments.

A thousand things could have been going through his mind at that moment, but in truth, there were only two. One was the girl who was running toward him through the snow and the other was the girl he had carried with him for so long. They had been the most important women in his life and it seemed fitting that one appeared at his side to bid him goodbye, and the other had come to welcome him home.

Miaka knelt in the snow next to Nuriko, begging with Tamahome to do something to stop the bleeding. Nuriko looked at his miko, she was silly and stupid but he would miss her. He told her not to worry about him. He told her he'd be around to watch over her. He told her he'd be there for her. In one way, this was all true, but not the way he wanted it. He reached up and whipped the tears from her eyes...his chest didn't even hurt anymore.

As Miaka and Tamahome's voices began to fade and he could no long differentiate sky from tree, another voice came to his ears. This one was familiar and comforting. With his little sister's voice beckoned him, he closed his eyes. No more Miaka to bug, no more Tasuki to beat up on, no more Hotohori to fawn over, and no more blue skies. He wasn't sure he was ready to leave them all behind, but as Kourin sweetly called his name, he gave into her bidding. He'd see his friends again, he knew he would. Of course, he hoped they wouldn't join him too soon but he'd see them...one day.

As Nuriko went limp in Tamahome's arms he couldn't help taking in a short, jagged breath and whispering the seishi's name, knowing all too well that it wouldn't bring his friend back.

Seven faces turned toward the sky at that moment, knowing something was missing from their lives. Since they had arrived in that cold land, the sky had hidden under a layer of clouds. Tamahome cursed the sky for being so beautiful on such a life changing day.
