The world was ending, that simply was it. Seventeen year old Ben Allen simply had no other explanation. Across from him on an apocalyptic landscape stood Professor Zoom, and his accomplice, Inertia, to Ben, they were a portrait of everything that had been tormenting him for days while his world crumbled. They were responsible for all the death, all the pain, all the sorrow. Ben looked over to his sole remaining relation, his older cousin, Jay Garrick, the superhero Mercury. Following his nod but watching the anger and sorrow in his eyes, Ben saw the signal to attack. He let out a ferocious war cry and leapt toward Zoom, super speed leaving all else behind. As Zoom rushed at Ben, who was rocketing towards him with the trademark yellow lighting of the Flash flowing behind him, he let loose cutting remarks. "Your life is gone, your city destroyed, your family either dead or twisted beyond recognition. You have nothing, nothing to return to, nothing to save!" Ben let loose a flurry of fists, each hitting only an afterimage. "Well then Zoom, you better be damn sure that I am going to kill you!" Ben screamed. To the normal eye, this would be nothing more than a blur of yellow and red, but to the combatants, it was a full blown brawl. Ben was roaring in anger, "It started with little four year old Barry all those years ago, and now you come back to finish us all!" Zoom only laughed, "Hah! You think I killed Barry? No, he is fine, in fact, doing better than fine!" Zoom glanced over to Jay, where Ben could see Inertia's anti-Speedforce powers were slowing Mercury down. Ben soon realized that Jay was about to lose. Rushing over, Ben tried to stop the killing blow. But all the super speed in the world couldn't stop Inertia as he plowed his hand through Jay's stomach. Ben stopped, and began to shake in rage. He ran over to Inertia and vibrated his hand clean through the demonic child's skull. As the body of Inertia fell to the war torn asphalt, Zoom laughed. Ben moved to Jay's side, their Speedforce energies forming an unbreakable aura. Jay was fading fast, and he was the only family Ben had left. "Jay, no, no Jay don't go," Ben sobbed. Jay's vigor was fading. "Don't give up Benjamin Allen, finish what you and I started, beat Zoom, save what remains." "But, he, he killed everyone, everyone is dead," Ben replied. "Still, don't lose yourself Benjamin. Take my speed to finish Zoom, you'll need it." His last breath relinquished, Jay Garrick, they legendary Mercury, died. Yellow lighting arced from Jay to Ben, and Ben suddenly felt faster, and turned, the barrier gone. Rushing at Zoom, Ben barreled into him as he broke the sound barrier, then surpassed light, and reached past time and space into the energy field known as the Speedforce, and with a final push Ben thrusted himself and Zoom in a suicidal burst into the Speedforce, with Ben only murmuring, "Have fun Zoom, it's the last run." Both speedsters then vanished in a flash of arcing lightning.
