Introduction: The Legend of the Protector

This is a tale of a world not unlike our own: there is good, there is evil; there is life, there is death; there is love, there is hate. But unlike our world with its technological and scientific advances, this is a place of magic and wonders beyond all imaginings; a place where mythical beasts roam the countryside, a place where adventurers make their ways across forbidden lands and darkened woods. It is truly a place of magical splendor.

But, as with all good things, there must always be a darker side. This world is no exception to that rule.

Long before our society was formed, in a time when pharaohs ruled, there existed a dark and terrible power, controlled by a being with no remorse or sense of decency. His evil threatened our planet with death and destruction until the mightiest of all the great pharaohs had him sealed within five stone tablets, and entrusted those cursed tablets to the High Mages of that other world.

While many breathed easy and continued on with their lives as they had before, there were still those who knew that the Evil One would return, wreaking havoc on both worlds in revenge for his living death. As long as he remained alive in any form, people would fear his great power, and only whisper his name only in the most sacred of holy temples.

For Exodia would live again.

As a precaution against such an event, the Pharaoh used the powers of seven mystical items to seal the passageway between the two worlds, and created an unholy place of death and never-ending despair as a barrier.

This was how the Shadow Realm came to be.

What the great ruler didn't realize was that every one thousand years, the powerful shadow magics holding the Forbidden One at bay would weaken, allowing him the span of one year to marshal the forces of darkness to join his cause and finally free his awesome power.

There was, however, a snag: those who were entrusted with the five tablets could use their combined powers to summon a protector from our world, a being of great courage, power, and wisdom, who would prevent the rise of Exodia for another thousand years. This power was later given to the greatest of the Dark Mages.

Five millennia have now passed, the seals have weakened, and Exodia bides his time and power, for this time will be different. Not even the fabled Protector can stop him, as the Evil One begins tightening his web of deceit and betrayal; a web one thousand years in the making.

The fate of the two worlds now hang in the balance, and the only person who can save them from utter chaos and destruction doesn't even know what's happening.
