Burning Cold

Prologue (I guess?)

It was a little over half a year since Ace had joined the Whitebeard pirates – and all was well. It was quite bizarre at first, to be sailing with one of the Four Emperors, Edward Newgate, infamously known as Whitebeard. He was very defiant during his first few months, refusing to befriend anyone on the ship – the hell, he even tried to go after Whitebeard's life on a daily basis! But now, he knew that he was perfectly happy to be on the Moby Dick, exactly where he belonged as one of Whitebeard's many sons.

Ace looked down at the main deck from the crow's nest and smiled fondly. Down there, was Whitebeard, his father, laughing as he listened to Thatch and Marco's silly stories. Thatch and Marco have always been there for Ace. They had persistently pursued him, accepting him for who he was. Then he saw next to Whitebeard, laughing with him, was Soul.

Soul was the only woman on board, also one of the eight head doctors, and was in charge of taking care of divisions one and two. This meant that whenever Ace got his ass kicked by Whitebeard back in his rebellious stage, he got dragged to Soul's office to get treated.

"You're being an idiot again, going after Captain's head like that. Try to be more careful, yeah?" She would say, but Ace wouldn't listen. He'd simply watch the way her long wavy hair would sway as she moved around, soft brown locks complimenting her bright blue eyes. (He'd be lying if he said she was unattractive.) So he'd remain silent while she treated him, simply watching her in his stupor.

Then, one day, Soul asked him: "Ace, are you happy?"

The question had come from almost nowhere and left Ace slightly surprised and irritated. "What kind of question is that? Of course I'm not. You guys abducted me and my crew! The only thing I want is to kill that old man, but I can't so now I'm stuck here with you looking after me every day like a child!"

He didn't mean to, and he would've perfectly understood if Soul had gotten mad at him for being rude. But to his surprise, she simply smiled at him.

"You know, the saddest thing in life is living without a purpose."

He didn't understand why she had said that when he said nothing about living with no purpose or whatsoever. She had asked him if he was happy, and he answered no. Starting to get frustrated, Ace was about to ask what she was trying to say when members of the first division flooded into the room, crowding around Soul to get treated after the raid that happened only moments before.

He never really bothered after then to ask her, but thinking now, freely sailing the seas with his father's mark tattooed on his back, Ace understood what she meant. Because now his purpose in life was to protect the ones he loved, including his new family... Even Soul, who slowly began to occupy a place in his heart.

A/N: Hellooooo! This is kind of the prologue before we jump into the main plot I guess? I absolutely had no idea how to start this story and to be honest I was too lazy to write how Ace accepts being a Whitebeard pirate and such so HAHAH THIS IS WHAT I CAME UP WITH

Thank you so so much for reading, and I will mucho appreciate it if you leave a review! Reviews motivate writers to write more! Criticisms are very welcomed, so go ahead u V u
