A/N: This is the second installment of the extended universe I recently created! The first installment is The Open Window, which is about Yang and Blake's first meeting. This story contains Weiss' and Ruby's first meeting, in the realm of this modern AU. For contextual purposes, you should know that Weiss is German, and is currently the head director of the American division of the Schnee Jewelry Company. She is a very busy woman. Enjoy!
Weiss tapped her high-heeled foot angrily as the line in front of her moved forward at a snail's pace. She checked her watch. 12:45. She had to be back at the office in fifteen minutes.
"Next!" the barista called.
The person in front of her ordered some sugary monstrosity that had to be at least four hundred calories, if not more. Weiss rolled her eyes in disgust. Didn't Americans care what they put into their bodies?
"Next!"
"Finally," Weiss groaned as she made it to the counter. Without missing a beat, she said, "Medium latte non-fat milk no foam." She knew how to order coffee.
The barista paused, then said, "Name please?"
"Weiss Schnee," she said, just as quickly as before. The barista scribbled something onto the cup, and passed it along to the one who made the coffee.
Weiss moved along to the end of the counter and stood next to the young woman who had ordered before her. She was humming quietly to herself and bouncing lightly on the balls of her feet, an attitude that contrasted drastically with the punk outfit she wore.
"Ruby," called the second barista as she placed the girl's drink on the counter. It was covered in whipped cream and chocolate syrup. The woman's eyes widened as she happily picked up the cup and sipped through the straw.
"Ooh, brain freeze," she said in a cutesy, high-pitched voice. This girl was like night and day.
"Ice Queen," came the call, as the barista put Weiss' cup on the counter.
"Excuse me?" Weiss asked, one perfect white-blonde eyebrow raised. "Is this some kind of a joke?" The words Ice Queen were scrawled on the side of the cup in black writing.
"That's what you said," the barista shrugged.
"You dolt! I said Weiss Schnee!"
"Weiss Schnee?" said the woman beside her.
"Yes!" Weiss acknowledged, giving her a quick look.
"Wait, did you say your name was Weiss Schnee?"
"Yeees…have we met?"
"Oh my god! I thought you looked familiar! Man, I have to tell you that Myrtenaster was my favorite band in high school. You were so rad!"
Weiss froze. "How do you know about that?" she asked, her tone icy.
"Oh, I've always been into underground stuff. And you guys, well, I was the only one of my friends who had heard of you. I gotta ask, why did you guys break up?"
"Familial obligations." Her words were short and curt.
"…Okaaaay…well, I'm Ruby Rose. It was really cool meeting you. Wait til I tell my sister!" the punk girl started to leave, but was stopped by the vice grip Weiss had on her upper arm.
"No. You cannot tell anyone about this. You understand? If word gets out that I was in rock band during business school, my reputation will be ruined. As far as my family knows, I only sing classical. Got it, Rose?"
"Sure thing," Ruby said meekly. Even though she was the same height as Weiss in her heels, she visibly shrunk under the businesswoman's pale blue glare.
"Good." Weiss let go and brushed herself off. She looked around; thank God no one saw that. She promptly left the coffee shop and got into her town car. As the black limo turned away from the curb, Weiss stared out the window at Ruby, who was sitting at the front of the shop looking very perplexed. Weiss let out a deep breath.
"Back to Schnee Jewelry, I presume?" asked the chauffer.
"Yes, Jameson."
The car made its way through the crowded streets of Vale City, leaving the coffee shop, and the strange girl, behind.
