Just a quick post-series one-shot about our favorite hero. TTGL = Studio Gainax, yadda yadda, you know the drill, pun unintended.
Spiral's End, Journey's End
It had been a long and eventful life for our hero.
Drilling holes was all he could do well, and drill them he did.
First, as a child, he drilled his way to the Surface.
Then, he drilled his way with the help of his Brother.
When his Brother left him, he drilled through despair and stood tall over everyone, announcing that while he was only good at one thing, he would do it because that was what he was.
He had become what he was good at.
Together with his new friends and family, they had drilled their way to victory.
After a brief lull, he found himself drilling through disbelief, distrust, and dishonesty.
And he broke through. Using what he had learned from his Brother, he drilled a hole through those who would betray him, to bring them back from their despair at what they had done.
He had drilled hope into the despairing as he had once did, a long time ago.
Shortly after that, he had taken the wishes of the fallen and the hopes of those who follow. Combining them into a spiral, he drilled his way towards tomorrow.
He drilled a hole that spanned the Universe itself.
He drilled through the apathy and fear that those like him before had, and promised that the hope he would pass on would make sure that this Universe would not suffer a grisly fate.
And after he accepted the consequences for what he had done, he had set out into the wilderness once more, drilling holes once again.
For tunnels, for flowers, for love, and for a million other reasons and for so many years that right now, at his death-bed, he could still remember wisps and fragments of.
As he prepared to close his eyes for the last time, a face wavered into view in his mind's eye.
Bro... I guess it's time.
He smiled, and his journey had finally ended.
As he opened his eyes once more, he looked into a very familiar pair of eyes.
"All the lights in the sky are stars. Stars where our Spiral friends are waiting."
"Oi, Simon! Let's get going. We still have a ways to go."
Another familiar voice came to him, and his lips curled into a smile.
It was only the beginning.
THE END
