This is a small one-shot I wrote a while back. I'm looking for inspiration. Please review!! It feeds my muse.
The Truth
The youngster didn't move when he sergeant yelled at him. He knew now. Do not move.
Don't make him angry.
The better you are the faster it all goes away.
Life on the road wasn't peaceful. It was cramped in the back seat, squashed between beaten bags and half concealed guns.
But he dealt with it.
There was nothing but this.
Home was gone.
Mama was gone.
Father was a commander. He was not father.
The youngster knew the rules. Do his job, protect his brother from coming to harm.
Sometimes he wished it wasn't this way.
He couldn't imagine a life where warm arms welcomed you home. Where fresh food was on the table…where there was a table.
It was just moving from one place to another. Everything was always different. Foreign.
He could lie awake at night in the semi darkness, on uncomfortable mattresses. He could think and pray to go home. He could wish.
Have you ever spent a night away from home? Missed that safety of their bed? Wished for a loved one?
He has.
He remembers, its water trickling through his fingers…but it's still there. The memory.
There was life before this.
After there will be none.
There is no going back…he is past the point of return.
It wasn't his fault. He was forced. It was how it happened.
It was out of control.
He couldn't understand normal.
Normal was having a pet dog; normal was parties.
Normal was sleeping in on Saturday.
Normal was shopping.
Normal was chores.
Normal wasn't orders. Normal wasn't pain. Normal wasn't pulling bullets out of friends and putting them in strangers. Normal wasn't chanting Latin rituals. Normal wasn't this.
But it was normal for him.
His army commander leant closer, dark eyes narrowing. "Don't let me down again!"
It was an order…not a request. Never a request.
The small boy nodded. Eyes downcast. "Yes Sir."
In sixteen years his younger brother would turn around and say "Six years old was too young to be fighting Dean!"
But he did it anyway.
Because, the truth was he had to.
What choice did he have?
-- The End --
I know I haven't updated anything in a while. I need some inspiration.
Please Review…it inspires me!!
