Amanda Bentley walked into the pathology lab, slightly annoyed that Steve had yet to arrive.

She had plainly told both Steve and Tanis to be in the path lab before 9:00AM and it was now getting

close to 10:00. Pullling out a stack of file folders, she plopped down at her desk to catch up on

paperwork until the homicide detective arrived.

She was puzzled over a death certificate when her telephone rang.

"Path Lab?" She answered, craddling the receiver and trying to recall the unfamiliar name

on the death certifcate.

"Amanda. It's Tanis."

"Hey, Tanis. How's it going."

"Not well....I'm down here at Mark's beach house. I came by to pick up Steve. The place has

been ransacked and he's nowhere to be found. Can you find Mark...you guys better get out here."

"I'm on my way!" Amanda disconnected and punched the ALL PAGE button on the receiver.

"Attention, Mark Sloan please dial pathology extension 367 Stat." She repeated the message twice

until her line started flashing.

"Mark is that you?"

"Yeah. Amanda what's wrong?"

"Mark your house has been ransacked and I can't find Steve. Meet me in the garage in five

minutes." She hung up the phone and slipped on her leather jacket. Grabbing her purse from under

the desk she headed out the door.

A horrible storm was battering the California Coast as Amanda and Mark sped toward Malibu in

her Jeep Grand Cherokee, pushing ninety as she weaved in and out of traffic on the rain drenched

highway.

Mark was too worried to chide her for the dangerous driving. On a good day Amanda Bentley had

road rage and he didn't want to fight it today.

It normally took Mark forty five minutes to get from Community General to his house in Malibu, but

today he was there in under thirty. Amanda sped past a couple in a Mercedes coupe and swerved into

Mark's driveway beside Tanis Archer's police car. Shoving the car into park, Amanda killed the ignition

hopped out.

Both Mark and Amanda were drenched by the time they made it inside the beach house, where

Tanis was waiting, talking with someone on the telephone.

"Okay guys." Tanis said, hanging up with phone with a deadly serious look. "We have a problem."
