Authors Notes - Just wanted to introduce everyone to my playing about with my favourite 2 people, Kencaris a reluctant god of my own creation set along side my favourite person from Tamora Pierce's P.O.T.S books (Protector and its characters belong to her not me I'm just playing with them for a bit) so let me know what you think and I will try to add more to this – Wildhart 2005/2006

Additional notes I am currently reworking and continuing this as an upcoming scene has been playing over in my head for years and as this is the very first fanfic to feature my muse Kenny so I what to finish it, though when I started this I didn't realise he was my muse until years latter if I hit a block with a story or something to write I just stuck Kenny in and the words just flowed, I still haven't gotten a beta for this and am more than happy to take one on, also I will try my best with reworked chapters to keep my comments intact – Wildhart 2017

Broken Chains

Prolouge

A young man looked about himself bewildered; he now stood in a room where a woman was in the process of giving birth, When only moments before he had been standing in the Great Hall of his family's ancestral home, arguing with his grandfather.

Trying to gain his bearings, he glanced about the room catching a momentary glimpse of himself in a mirror. Surprised he looked back taking a step towards his reflected image. The surprise in his forest green eyes reflected back clearly as he looked at the rest of his reflection. he stood there in the common simple dressed of a slave, raged and rough sack cloth tunic and trews broken chains trailing from shackles on his wrists, his age seemed to be of about 15 or 16.

It hadn't been long since he had been confirmed as the god Kencaris, god of slaves and freedom, the argument with his grandfather had been about his newly acquired title and its responsibilities conflicting with his grandfathers ideas for his life. But to see the affect of his godhood so suddenly and completely for the first time was a surprise.

He was surprised from his contemplation and his memories by a light chuckle from beside the labouring woman, a figure he knew well from his mother's friendship with the goddess, stood there slightly bowed over the woman her fingers ghosting gently over her sweating forehead as she laboured to bring the new life of her child into the world

She was the grate goddess of mothers and childbirth to the lands that the second of the two great warriors called home. An honoured and powerful figure in this world, his senses told him as he focused on it seeing the aura of her power glowing brightly in his mind. a small thread of which was flowing into the mother to be

"Lady Mother? Do you know why I am here" he walked up to where she stood still lightly stroking the woman's head and whispering words of comfort and strength to the labouring woman

All the occupants of the room seemed to be ignoring the pair as they looked at each other over the pregnant woman and continuing with the delivery as if the two divine presences weren't even there and to them he realised all the sounds in the room apart from the goddess's voice were strangely muted and distant

"As it must be all gods must be at the birth of their chosen, to give the infant its first breath" the goddess said as the child emerged into the world

He was drawn to the silent small form as the midwife lifted the newborn in to her arms. As the midwife turned from the mother the world and time froze. the Great Mother moved forward and lifted the child from the midwife's arms and gently placed the child into his arms that he was surprised to find were out stretched ready to receive the child

he looked down at the infant still covered in the gore of its birth to find it was a little girl he held though it seamed she was also frozen as she made neither a movement or sound, not even a breath. for a moment he just held her just looking at her still form. then, without a thought and by some unknown instinct, he lent down and kissed the child on her tiny lips. It was only a small peck but the child took its first intake of breath strait from his slightly open mouth as he breathed lightly on her and proceeded to give a strong cry, the loud sound surprising him to almost dropping her

then images started to flood his mind, not past images as was one of his abilities but future ones of the child as she grew, he saw her bullied and knocked down, he saw her fighting to keep up and to stand strong on her own, he saw her having to face her fears and rise above them. All he saw was her doing things on her own until she found her place and then he was beside her his aura glowing and as the goddess's had flowed to the mother so his did to her only the flow was more of a thick rope than a tiny thread

"So" the goddess stood beside him smiling a knowing smile, her fingers brushing the newborn's head as her cries quieted to whimpers "how will you teach this child, help her and guide her?" she took the little girl from him and passed her back in to the arms of the midwife and the world began to move again

He watched as the little girl child was washed of the signs of birthing, wrapped in a blanket and presented to her tired mother

"I can't, her fate is to prove herself on her own without my help until she is ready to stand at my side, I don't know how but this I feel is how it should be" the confusion of what he had seen still puzzling him

"then that is how it will be" The goddess smiled, almost giggled and vanished with a playful flourish

He sighed as the last signs of her leaving faded and watched as the child was being presented her father who had just arrived into the now cleaned and calm birthing room, the sounds now returning to normal with the goddess's departure

"My Lord, your daughter"

'a noble' he thought as he watched as the child was shown to her father. The father took her and Kencaris smiled as he recognised the look the father gave his wife, he saw it enough between his own parents

He continued to watch, backing in to an out of the way corner, as the child's parents cooed over her before inviting the rest of their family to meet the newest member, it seemed his chosen was the youngest of a number of siblings

"little one, I wish I can be there for whatever events that will shape your life, I wish I could be there beside you though it all but it is not to be. So my Little Starlight, shine strong and true and remember one day I will be there to stand beside you and remember my Starlight, whatever you face, I will always love you" he stepped back, deeper into the shadows and faded away as the child's name was chosen

"Let's name her Keladry"

Afterword – first rewrite done, I will work on chapter 1, tomorrow and will upload it as soon as it is done. Hopefully as well as correcting some issues things are a little clearer, I now have to find my P.O.T.S books and re-read to check facts (Was 658 words now 1324)
