A blast of darkness shout out of the mouth of an angered Gengar.

The battle had been raging for hours and still no clear victor was in sight.

Gengar stepped back and disappeared.

"He's using Faint Attack, Gengar!" the trainer yelled.

"Gengar can't learn Faint Attack!" said a spectator, correcting the trainger from the stands.

Suddenly, Gengar appeared and punched Ursaring hard in the ribs. Shaken but barely affected, Ursaring regained his composure and mustered up a violent Fury Swipes attack. His long claws tore into the whispy flesh of Gengar but seemed to do nothing.

With it's jaw clenched, Gengar tried again with a Focus Punch to the ribs but Ursaring had been anticipating it and pounced with a Slash almost immediatley.

"We got him that time!" the trainer shouted with an optimistic tone.

Gengar settled into a crouching position and looked over his opponent. The whole battle, not a word had been spoken by his trainer. It was as if they shared one brainwave and no verbal communication was necessary.

Ursaring continued his attempt to defeat the seemingly tireless Ghost and Poison type Pokemon. Going into the battle, no one knew what to expect. Both trainers had illustrious careers up to this point. Joey and his Ursaring had already cleared the first seven gyms while Adam and his Gengar had all eight badges but had not yet challenged the Pokemon League. The trainers and their respective Pokemon were on an even skill level and it clearly showed by the length of this battle.

As if it's life had been thrust back into it, Gengar lurched into the sky and came down hard on Ursaring's head with a Shadow Punch attack. Ursaring's body was lost in a cloud of pitch-black matter and then reappeared in a heap on the ground. It hadn't fainted; no, it was only using sleep to regain some much-needed strength.

Gengar returned to this crouching position and stared at Ursaring's body. It's menacing green eyes seemed to look straight into the soul of the Normal type Pokemon. No one had realized this but Gengar was actually using Nightmare on the Ursaring! The sleeping bear's body stirred at the other end of the battlefieled. It began to toss and turn until it awoke with an ear-shattering roar. Ursaring took a few steps forward and then broke into a sprint at the Gengar, who was still crouched a couple of feet in front of his trainer.

In one quick motion, Gengar somersaulted over the rampaging Ursaring and, upon landing, blasted a Shadow Ball straight into it's back. Ursaring fell to his knees and panted for breath. His back ached, his ribs shot pain through his body but most of all he was tired.

But Ursaring wouldn't give up! He had fought for so long and he didn't want to let his trainer down. In one final, valiant attempt Ursaring climbed to his feet and spun around.

But Gengar was waiting.

He clenched his fists and put all of his energy into an explosive Hyper Beam attack. A solid column of energy shot all the way across the field in a perfectly straight line. Ursaring's chest received the brunt of the attack but the agony was felt through it's entire being.

Ursaring fell to the ground. Defeated.

A smile appeared on Adam's face as he fished Gengar's Pokeball out of his pocket. The Pokemon dropped to one knee and disappeared into the ball. Without having spoken a single word, Adam, with the help of his Gengar, was able to defeat Joey's tough Ursaring.

Joey ran to where his Pokemon's body lay mangled on the field while Adam casually strolled out of the arena.
