"Move," a voice whispered firmly in her head, snapping her out of her paralysis.
"Wait," Paige choked out.
She stepped toward Spencer and wrapped her fingers gently around Spencer's wrist, halting her steps. Spencer partially turned around. "I can't…," she said.
The look on her face was sad and pained. Paige had never seen such a combination on the usually strong and resilient girl. It made her ache and wish she could make it go away by simply caressing it away. But she knew that touching Spencer in that way right now was the wrong thing to do. "Don't leave," she quietly pleaded.
"I can'—"
"Yes, you can. Please. I don't want to know what it's like to attempt to get over you," Paige said.
Spencer swallowed hard at the words. Her eyes welled with tears. She opened her mouth but her voice broke before any words could form. "Move," Paige's brain said, seeing shift.
Paige stepped closer and placed her free hand against Spencer's cheek. Spencer closed her eyes and slightly leaned against it. She opened them slowly and looked at Paige for a moment. "I don't want to know what it's like either," she said softly, but showed no indication of yielding.
Paige felt her stomach tighten at Spencer's expression only became sadder. She felt herself panic when Spencer started to pull away from her touch. "Move!" her brain yelled.
"Then you don't have to," Paige said, quickly restoring her palm against Spencer's cheek and leaning forward.
It was a desperate kiss. It was a 'here goes everything' kiss. But it was also soft and full of promise and want and longing. Paige's shoulder muscles loosened when she felt Spencer kissing her back.
After they pulled apart, Spencer rested her forehead against Paige's. "Okay," she said in a soft, quiet voice; a small smile on her face.
