The Lamp-Post is straight ahead, lighting up a leaf-covered path and a little of the forest beyond. Lucy can't believe it because for years she dreams of this moment and when it's finally here, she's alone.
Her parents are there, enjoying the festivities of a solemn day in which they are welcomed to a new, splendid land before the gates close forever. Peter and Edmund are also there, laughing with Polly, Digory, Eustace and Jill.
An empty place inside her heart shrivels and dies in spite of the perceived happiness.
