Title: Wash The Echoes Out
Genre: Romance
Rating: PG
Pairing: Kate/Ziva
Summary: Ziva, Kate, and a late-night encounter in the bullpen.
Author's Notes: ...I don't even know what this is. Really. I think I might like it though, even if it is really short and kind of random. Feedback would be great! Title is from "Drumming Song" by Florence + the Machine

"You have his eyes."
Ziva does not remember arriving in the Bullpen. Everything seems almost...foggy and really, the last thing she remembers is falling asleep. Immediately, she assumes this is a dream. That is why she is not all that surprised when she turns in her desk chair and finds Caitlin Todd standing there, studying her with a lopsided expression, "Dark. Kind. Just like Ari's."
"I am not like Ari," Ziva defends herself reflexively. The sentence fizzles off into a near-whisper as Kate settles on Ziva's desk. The woman continues to study her with that strange expression. For an instant, Ziva swears she can see the outline of a bullet hole, painted in the center of Kate's forehead. Then is disappears and Ziva wonders if she just imagined it.
There's a pause as Kate reaches out. Her fingers trace along the air, just above Ziva's cheek. The Israeli can almost feel them fluttering over her skin. Her heart abuses her throat. Her breath catches in her lungs. Kate speaks quietly, but her voice seems strangely loud, "I know."
Then Kate leans across the desk and kisses her, suddenly, softly. Ziva wonders if this really is just a dream or hallucination or if she is really talking to Kate Todd. Her lips feel so real (too real). They're soft and careful. They taste like cinnamon toothpaste. Ziva relaxes into it, her eyes closing, her muscles going slack.
When she re-opens her eyes a moment later, Kate is gone. The bullpen is empty and Ziva sits back in her chair, fingers coming to rest on her lips.
Suddenly, she feels incredibly cold and alone.
