Is This All That I Am?
This story is written in the point of view of Wesley Crusher shortly before he goes to Starfleet Academy. I understand his POV, as I imagine anyone who has ever questioned their life path. So often he said to his surrogate family, "I've done everything everyone has asked of me and more," and it makes me think that what happened to him in Season 7 was inevitable because he didn't want to disappoint his mother, surrogate father and brothers and sister. My name is Wesley Crusher. I am the son of Beverly Crusher, the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Enterprise and Lieutenant Commander Jack Crusher, who died when I was five years old. For about ten years, I didn't have a dad, and then I came to the Enterprise and met Captain Jean-Luc Picard, a man who scared me at first. He didn't like kids, so he said, but after a while, I could tell he liked me. Everyone in the command crew liked me, even when I was a real pain.
Commander William Riker, the first officer of the Enterprise, is probably the guy who's like my oldest brother. He's taught me things an older brother would teach me, such as how to score with women (I think I need more lessons). Geordi LaForge is older than me, but sometimes we get along like we're the same age. He helps me with my school projects and we occasionally play pranks on the crew. Data is an android who's super smart, but sometimes he's like my little brother who needs to be taught how to be cool (not that I'd know about being really cool). Then there's Deanna Troi. She's the ship's counselor, and she's really nice. If I need somebody to talk to and I can't talk to the guys, I talk to her. I had another "sister" a few years ago, but Tasha died, so I didn't get to know my "sister" all that well.
I love my "family" a lot, and I want to make them proud of me. I've kept saying I want to be in Starfleet, but… I'm not sure I want to go into Starfleet Academy. Is this the only way I can show how smart I am? Is this all that I am? My name is Wesley Crusher, and I hope that I'm better than just being a brain.
