Hermione looked at the beauty spell with a blank look on her face, debating about whether she should use it. She didn't usually want to change her looks – self-loathing had never been her thing – but she was going to marry a Lord to the Black house. She needed to be a proper match for him, even if it was against both of their wills.
She still couldn't believe she was being forced to marry a Pure-blood because of some ancient contract. She never thought something like this would ever happen to her since she was a mere Muggle-born, but the incident of when she saved Regulus's life activated the contract thanks to a trigger clause.
She sighed, wondering how doing a good deed could backfire in such a way. Deep down, she knew she could probably love Regulus if she tried. He had some bad qualities, but they wouldn't be hard to overlook because they were a part of who he was, and they completed him. She knew she could come to rely on him and need him, and love him with her heart because she admitted, even if only to herself, that she already had a crush on him. The real question was could he find a way to love her?
She could do the spell, make herself look prettier, but a makeover wouldn't mask the fact that she was a Muggle-born, something Regulus seemed to detest like most Slytherins.
She knew she needed to talk to him before their wedding. Maybe they could come to some sort of agreement. She stood up and went to find him, ending up by the Black Lake. She walked up to him and didn't startle when he abruptly looked at her.
She nervously swallowed. "Are we at least going to be polite each other or will our marriage be a constant battle?"
Regulus straightened his spine. "I've been thinking about that, and I've made a decision. We can be happy in the future or we can be angry about the past. Being angry isn't going to change what's going to happen, though."
Hermione nodded. "I promise I'll do my best to be a good wife. I'll do everything I can to learn the Pure-blood customs. I'll even use the beauty spell if you want me to."
Regulus shook his head. "Don't worry about the spell. I actually find you quite pleasing to the eyes."
She blushed. "Really?"
"Really. And if you do your best to be a good wife, I can do my best to be a good husband."
She smiled. Maybe this marriage wouldn't be the end of her life. Maybe they could fall in love.
