I realize Roxas and Xion are probably not so naive that they don't know what a mother is. Bare with me.
"Axel, what's a 'mother'?"
Axel turned away from his ice cream to look at the questioning blonde. "Huh?"
"Tomorrow is Mother's Day," Roxas explained. "I heard the local kids talking about it, they were worried about buying a present or something."
Beside him, Xion nodded, taking a lick of her ice cream. "I was wondering about that, too. I don't know why, but the thought makes me sad …"
Axel said the first thing that came to his mind. "A mother is someone who takes care of you."
Xion and Roxas took a moment to consider this. "So, like you?" Xion asked.
"What?!" The redhead felt the heat rise to his cheeks. "No, a woman. A parent. You know, the person who gives birth to you?"
"Oh …" Xion said softly, looking at her hands.
"But please, feel free to buy my ice cream tomorrow anyway."
"So," Roxas considered, "Me and Xion don't have mothers than, right? Since no one gave birth to us."
Axel nodded solemnly. "That's right."
Xion tilted his head at him. "Did you have a mother when you were human, Axel?"
He scratched his head. "Well, yeah. Everyone does."
"What was she like?" Roxas asked.
"She was …" Axel paused. He rarely gave a thought to his family, and he wasn't sure how clear his memories were anymore. "She was like most mothers, I guess. She yelled at me a lot." He chuckled. "I always had a knack for trouble."
"Do you miss her?" the blonde asked.
"That's impossible, kid. No emotions, remember?"
"Right …"
"I think maybe, I remember something about my mother. Or someone's …" Xion said.
"Really." Axel wondered to himself which of Sora's memories she was thinking of.
"What do you remember?" Roxas asked eagerly.
"Something about dinner, I think."
Axel smiled. "Yeah. Moms usually make good dinner."
"Xigbar makes good dinner!" Roxas pointed out.
Axel laughed. "He's definitely not the motherly figure I had in mind, but you're right." He looked towards the sun. "It's getting late, we should probably head back."
The two younger Nobodies agreed while the redhead opened the portal. As they stepped through, Axel paused. He looked back towards the sky and said, very quietly, "Happy Mother's Day, Mom."
Just a short little drabble because I was wondering whatever happened to Axel's parents. And this doesn't answer it but … Oh well. Happy Mother's Day!
