Smile

A sea of smiling faces. Sometimes at night he'd close his eyes and there they'd be, all beaming their happiness at him. Parties, weddings, holidays, family snap-shots, formal portraits, all smiling, enjoying life.

The little girl smiling in front of the Christmas tree, who trusted the nice man from down the street, who she'd known all her life. The man who couldn't fight his urges anymore, and ended up doing unspeakable things while the little girl begged for her mom, and he shut her up by squeezing the life out of her with his hands.

The bride and groom smiling and in love. Then six years later he was fucking his secretary and decided a divorce was too expensive. He stabbed his bride to death while she slept, and faked a burglary.

The teenage girl who pulled faces, and laughed, while getting four tiny pictures taken in a photo booth. Then she got into a green Ford Taurus with a psychopath, and ended up as victim number twenty-two, or "… twenty-three counting that hunting accident…"

Smiling, unaware of the horrors the future held. The smiling faces of the dead always made him shudder, and disturbed his sleep on the darkest nights.
