At first Charlie wasn't sure about Edward. Sure, the kid was polite, he always made sure Bella got home before it was too late, and his grades were exemplarity, but chalk it down to 'father's protective instinct' he still wasn't good enough for his Bella.
There was just something strange about him.
Whenever he shook his hand Edward's felt as if it had been an active participant in a snowball fight in Antarctica during winter. Without gloves.
And his eyes. More than once he had wondered if Dr. Cullen experimented on his children. Of course Carlisle would never do that, but the fact they all possessed the same amber eye colour was a little messed up.
When Bella had gone away to Italy to save Edward that was the last straw. He remembered young love, he had felt it more than a few times, but going to another country to track down a guy who - how did the kids say it? - had been a complete asshole was almost worthy of hospitalisation.
Why couldn't his daughter be with the young Black boy? Jacob was a good kid. Unlike Edward he seemed truly devoted to her, but she never saw it. At one time he thought he was looking at his future son-in-law, but then Edward came back, and with that Bella's love for him - although if he was honest with himself he doubted it had truly left.
He had tried to create distance between them. His attempts only seemed to make is worse, but as time passed he began to grudgingly like Edward more. Bella seemed to remember there were more people in her life than himself and the Cullen's, and steadily their relationship looked a little healthier than it had in the past.
And it was because of this he had what was perhaps the most awkward conversation with Bella to date.
Sex.
They had been dating on and off for about three years, and really he probably should have done it sooner.
Times like this he wished Renee hadn't moved quite so far away.
He couldn't describe how delighted he was when he found it wasn't necessary. Whilst Edward never seemed like the 'Wham, bang, thank you Mam' type, it was nice to see just how much he cared for his daughter. He knew what guys these days could be like, he had arrested more than a few.
All of this indicated that he really shouldn't have been so surprised just now.
What had Edward just said?
'Chief Swan, I have came here with the intention of asking for your daughter's hand in marriage...'
Oh. Where was his gun? An answer quickly appeared and he realised it was in the kitchen in its holster. Edward would probably find it suspicious if he offered him a cup of tea - not that the boy actually drank anything.
He never really believed in signs from above, but this was a good time as any to start looking.
"... Fine."
I got a challenge from Alice Wednesday to write a Charlie and Edward fic with humour and romance in it. Technically it discusses romance so that counts! I'm sorry if this is completely awful though, I'm really not experienced with this fandom.
DISCLAIMER: I do not own Twilight.
