— Ageless —
Two months of endless thoughts.
Two months of constant loneliness that mingled at the edges with nostalgia.
The two months that had passed painfully and yet swiftly had brought changes. Changes that seemed ephemeral, but were in fact eternal.
Mai glanced at the buildings on the street now and then while pushing through the sea of people. She was supposed to reach an hour later, but here she was an hour early, jostling through the busy streets of Shibuya. Frequent glances at her watch did her no good. Time moved as it was designed to. Slowly, yet fast in it's own twisted manner.
Inevitably, Mai ended up at the office, forty-five minutes earlier than the stipulated time.
She stood at the end of the staircase that would lead up to a door. A door that opened up distant memories, that had been overwritten by new ones. However, they persisted in their own strange manner — in after images, dreams and sudden nostalgic moments.
Mai took a step at a time.
The two months that she had spent realizing her mistakes, learning from them and leaving them behind had helped her evolve. Her outlook had changed, yet she was the same person.
She had realized that perhaps, the world didn't end on being rejected.
The world didn't end on being hurt.
The phone call that she had received from him had sent electric shocks of joy through her soul.
The voice on the other side had asked her to come back and how could she say no! She had been tempted to trample on his hopes, but she knew that she would be trampling on her own hopes if she did so.
She had after all, learned in those two months that life existed only on the basis of hope.
She had hoped that he would be back.
She had hoped that he would ask her to come back.
She had hoped and hoped.
The steps were decreasing one at a time. Her destination was soon to arrive.
Mai had learned that all in life was just but a moment, that remained as a memory.
She had made her own share of memories. Memories of a family. Memories of a crush that she had harbored for quiet a while.
Mai laughed softly at the thought.
The crush that she had on Naru still lingered. She was afraid that her heart would stop beating when she would see him. Absolutely absurd.
She turned to face the door. Her eyes followed the curve of the S and reached to the R. Her heart pounded painfully in her chest, her breath constricted. She placed her hand on the knob, waiting for the right moment.
To this moment, only one thought existed in her mind.
She wanted to meet them all again.
Life was too short. There was so much to experience, so much to feel.
She had passed through various situations of life. Right from the foolish crush, to the painful rejection and now onto the ever-existing hope. She had so much yet to live for. She had so much yet to see.
She was just sixteen.
Just sixteen.
As each year would pass by, Mai would learn. She would grow old. She would experience. She would feel and she would make memories.
Memories that would keep her ageless.
Mai opened the door. A gust of wind passed her.
She looked straight ahead. A pair of blue eyes met hers.
An inevitable smile escaped her lips.
Maybe, just maybe, it was time to make some new, ageless memories.
A/N — Liked it? I was playing around with thought of how young and naive Mai is, how much potential she has and well — I couldn't help myself. I just typed as fast as I could.
