dead flame
girl I'm talking lives

Allie's lost count of how many times that week she's stared at the ceiling and not slept. Staring at the ceiling, wondering if she was doing the right thing, fiddling with the thread in the duvet whilst Vaughan's snoring softly beside her.

Nobody said it was going to be easy but at the same time she didn't expect it to be this hard either.

It was never easy to take on someone else's children, she knew that. She knew it was just as hard for Vaughan to take on her children as it was for her to take on his. But her children were willing to give Vaughan a chance, his weren't so understanding as hers.

But then Allie remembers that she did break an already fragile relationship because she fell in love with a married man. She understands that's where the resentment comes from, she took Vaughan away from his children — least that's what they think she did.

There's so many questions she doesn't know the answer to yet, so many answers she's afraid to discover eventually when the time comes.

Did she make the right choice? Was it right to start a relationship with Vaughan when he was still technically married to his wife? Could she ever be viewed as anything other than the wicked step-mother? But the biggest question of all, could her and Vaughan's relationship survive?

That was the question she was afraid to answer most because what if all this hadn't been worthwhile, where did Allie go from that?
