a/n | for claratwo & the (i suck i'm so sorry / belated) halloween exchange

this was terrible. i'm sorry. and it's not even a pairing.

there was a time when she wasn't just
that strange girl with synesthesia
the silent one with the melancholy eyes
and cracked lips that never smiled.

untouchable and dauntless
the little girl with the woodpecker pajamas
sizzling like a can of dr. peppers
fighting away monsters with her toy sword
flying across horizons with her wings.

until the vibrant colors of childhood
all drained out and washed away
replaced by the guidelines and labels
of the world we live in now.

"always shoot a zombie in the head,
that's the only way to kill them," she'd say
and they found a way to kill her too
to kill her spirit, her innocence.

the books on her shelf are gathering dust
and her eyes are shattered glass
she's full on words that were never said
like an old photograph, fading away
she's slowly bleeding out.

and the air tastes like stale smoke
mixed with a tinge of sorrow and bitterness
all that's left is memories now
and we tell children to learn from us
when we should be learning from them.
