Harry Potter woke up. He stretched, and reached to his dresser for his glasses.
His trunk for Hogwarts was already packed, and waiting in the corner of his bedroom.
Harry dressed, and ran a comb through his hair. He bent over and re-read the last letter from Ron. He couldn't wait to get to King's Cross.
"Harry? Breakfast is ready!"
"Coming, mum!" he shouted, giving his hair one last run-through with a comb.
He flounced down the stairs, through the living room, and into the dining room.
Harry's dad sat at the table with his feet neatly propped up in a vacant chair. Reading that day's copy of the DAILY PROPHET.
He peered over his glasses at his son, who was now helping himself to blueberry muffins and orange juice. "Are you ready?"
Harry nodded, wiping a bit of blueberry away from his mouth. "Mmm hmm," he mumbled.
"James Potter! Get your feet out of that chair!" Lily bustled out of the kitchen, holding a fresh platter of bacon.
She turned to Harry and ruffled his hair. "Hon, did you get enough to eat?"
Harry nodded, halfway through a strip of bacon.
"Oh sure! He gets a 'hi hon', and I get fused at for being comfy." James folded up his paper and removed his feet from the chair.
Lily smiled as sarcastically as she could. "I love you too, dear."
James stood up and gave his wife a quick kiss. "Love you too, sweetums." He pinched lily's cheek and made a baby face.
"Mmm-kvay," Harry mumbled, halfway through another muffin.
He pushed past the swinging wooden door into the kitchen. Sirius Black was leaning against the door jam.
"Mumphiuph!" Harry gulped down the rest of his muffin and pounced on his god-father.
Sirius gave Harry a hug, and ruffled his messy hair. "How've you been?"
Harry smirked and attempted to fix his hair. "I'd be fine if people would stop messing with my hair."
Sirius grinned and patted Harry's shoulder. His shiny black hair was cut close to his ears, and his dark eyes were shimmering in the early morning light.
James stepped into the kitchen, followed by Lily. "Don't you just miss the good old days at Hogwarts?"
Sirius smiled with a glint of mischievousness.
"Oi! Harry, what have you got in this thing?" Remus Lupin huffed into the kitchen, pulling Harry's trunk behind him with one hand, and holding Hedwig's cage in the other.
"Remus!" Harry darted back across the kitchen to administer another hug.
"Do NOT touch the hair," Harry warned.
Lupin grinned.
Harry suddenly became very light headed. The room around him began to spin, slowly at first, and then faster and faster. He saw the smiling faces of everyone around him start to diminish. Everything was becoming dark.
Harry tried to focus; his eyes finally rested on an open window, where the stars could be seen twinkling in the night sky.
The soft yellow light from the window faintly illuminated the room around him. The broken toys and discarded playthings in Dudley Dursley's second bedroom seemed to haunt Harry's eyes.
His stomach lurched. "It was all just a dream..." he whispered to a sleeping Hedwig.
She stirred in her cage and gave Harry a curious look.
Harry drug himself out of bed and pulled a leather bound book out of his trunk. He flipped to a well-worn page.
James and Lily Potter waved at him happily. Sirius was missing from the picture, but could be found not to far away, conversing with a photograph of Remus Lupin. The pair of friends waved when they noticed Harry.
Tears began to stream down his eyes, and he slammed the book shut.
Vernon Dursley snored loudly from the other room, and Dudley made a strange murmuring sound.
Harry leaned up against a wall, clutching the book to his chest. He closed his eyes, thinks of what might have been.
