Prologue

In the land of the Makai, there are many traditions. There are traditions for common demons even the royalty. Every since the beginning of time, the Makai has been ruled by the Ouritsu family. The Ouritsu family consists of dragon demons such as: fire, wind dragons, earth dragons, ice dragons, light dragons, dark dragons, and even sun dragons and moon dragon demons.

At the time the Makai was ruled by Lord Takehiko, the dragon demon of the sun. He was their best ruler so far. There were few wars, famines, and droughts so far in his reign. He was only merciful towards those closest to him. He could be easily bribed with money. Yet he was a good lord, husband, and father.

His wife, Sumiko, the dragon demoness of the moon, was beautiful and poised. She seldom spoke since ladies of the time were considered not as important as their husbands. When she did speak however, she spoke with the kindness of a mother. She and her husband were quite different because of their arranged marriage.

The couple had five daughters and no sons, which was typical in the Makai kingdom. According to tradition, the eldest daughters would be married to demons of the father's choice. The youngest would stay at the kingdom, and she would be married to the winner of the legendary suitor tournament.

The oldest daughter was Natsuko, the dragon demoness of fire. She controlled all things of fire with her dances. Many said that even the slightest movement of her hips would cause a pile of wood to burst in to flame. She had a very hot temper, and was very spoiled. She saw herself as the best, and anyone who stood in her way would get burned.

The next daughter was Haruko, the wind dragon demoness. Her powers consisted of control over winds and clouds. She could bring up storms if she was willing. Yet she rarely had control of her powers. They seemed to go into effect with Haruko's mood. When she was sad, it would rain. When she was happy, slight breezes would blow tickling all of the Makai. She was the most behaved of her sisters, compassionate yet scared easily.

After Haruko was Moriko, the dragon demoness of the earth. She controlled the terrestrial weather with her chants. Very calm and collected, she can get hyper at times. She is very friendly and dances. That is she tries to dance.

The second youngest was Yukiko, a dragon demoness of ice. She tended to keep to herself, and seldom make conversation. She was very talented, yet kept her powers to herself. She thought it was unlady-like to do such a thing.

The last dragon demoness was Chiyoko. She had an unusual category. Her powers were a combination of moon and sun. Legend has it, that when sun and moon meld, they form psychic abilities of light and darkness. Chiyoko was no exception. She was exceptionally bright and tough. She also was Natsuko's, her older sister, competition. She was the only one who could ever get Yukiko to talk. Her selflessness was her most astonishing trait.

In a land of tradition, women are treated poorly, as tools for men's use. Only one girl was brave enough to stand up to Takehiko. And that girl was his own daughter, Chiyoko. This is a story of her quest to regain justice for her gender. It would take her to islands, mountains, swamps, and more. Now a story of a struggle of a young girl and her beliefs arises, taking the hearts of all who hear.
