Nod to Isherwood/Tom Ford's A Single Man in the title, the last scene of the film that made me do this.

New New York (well, New New New New New New New New New New New New New New New New York) would be safe again, he thought, feeling so tired.

He'd lived long enough – millions of times over! – to know himself. There wasn't much left now. Finally, it was running out. It was always meant to at some point, he knew that. It really wasn't possible for anything to never end. He certainly had tested the limits, though! Not that he'd meant to. If it'd been up to him, he'd have died all those eons ago on that gorgeous parquet floor….

He hadn't though, and surely he'd gone on to do good things since. He'd loved again, a number of times, eventually. Though never quite as fully. That wouldn't have been possible. He had cared though… and they always knew, no one had been under the impression that there hadn't been a past.

And there was his old friend… just as he'd remembered him, sticky-uppy hair and all. What they'd been through together…. But this Doctor didn't know that yet, didn't know what would happen when another Time Lord turned up. And there wasn't much time, he hardly had a breath left to explain. The Doctor was clever, though, he'd work it out.

He closed his eyes. He couldn't see now anyway, not really. All those years, and now, just like that….

Suddenly, he wondered when he'd opened his eyes again. It was blurry, but he could make out a figure. Not the Doctor with his rumpled suit and hair. This was someone much tidier walking toward him as his vision began to clear. The man leaned down to kiss him and help him up. And then he saw clearly….

"Ianto?"

"Hello."

"You're how I remembered… you haven't changed…. It's been so long… so long."

"How long?"

"I don't know… forever. Billions… I watched the sun devour the earth…."

"And you remembered… all that time?"

"I never forgot, I never stopped thinking of you, loving you."

"Neither did I – although I think it's only been about 5 minutes. Can't have been much longer than that. I just woke up."

"You look the same. What do I look like?"

Ianto laughed. "Like my handsome Captain. Just how I remembered you."

"This is really always, isn't it?"

"I think so," Ianto nodded, taking Jack's hand. He'd forgotten what it felt like, someone holding his hand….
